I. Lewis Scooter Libby won't lack powerful friends or financial resources when he goes on trial on Tuesday. A private fund set up to pay the legal bills of the former top aide to Vice President Dick Cheney has collected more than $3 million since Libby's indictment 14 months ago.

Nevertheless, the Armitage disclosure further strengthened the belief among Libbys many influential friends and supporters that he is an innocent man whose life has been turned upside-down by unjust accusations.
One of those friends is Dick Carlson, a former ambassador and Republican stalwart who has headed the Voice of America and the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. (Carlsons son is Tucker Carlson, the conservative TV pundit.)
Like many of Libbys well-heeled friends, Carlson wasted no time in coming to his aid. On the day the indictment was announced in October 2005, Carlson said: I sent a check by courier to Scooters house in McLean with the assumption that hed need it.
That check was the impetus for what quickly morphed into The Scooter Libby Legal Defense Trust. A source close to the trust said more than $3 million has been collected to pay Libby's legal bills. The public face of the defense fund is a cadre of Republican heavyweights that include Mary Matalin, Steve Forbes and Jack Kemp.
Another Libby stalwart is former CIA director Jim Woolsey, who has known Scooter for years.

Brand estimates that Libby will need an eye-popping $5 million to cover his legal costs, which also include a civil suit filed against him.

Bless Mary Matalin .. she's been in there plugging for him all the way through, and also all his very notable and well-known friends and colleagues. So many of them have been out there and are very public in their loyalty and support to him. Says a lot.

Prayers for Scooter. The whole article's worth reading.
Scooter has a LOT of support ... PING!
Libby BumP
Now THAT's interesting.
The whiney tone to the article that you point out is notable. It has the whiff of the liberal concept of "Innocent until proven guilty, unless you're a Republican."

Scooter Libby in Court: The Trial That Did Not Have to Happen
Wonder how long it will take for his lawyers to determine what their bill will be.
Frankly, it enrages me.
In a just world, reporters would be encamped outside of the Clinton home demanding answers to the Sandy Burglar crime and it would be a 24/7 story.
Five million dollars to fight this bogus charge? Incredible! Between Nifong in NC and Fitz it makes one very skeptical of the 'justice' system!
Also the host of The Danger Zone on 630WMAL in the DC area Sunday evenings.....
Out of control prosecutors like Fitzgerald should somehow be brought to heel, or made to pay professionally.
Consider: two border agents jailed for doing their job: three Duke students falsely accused; Scooter Libby prosecuted for nothing.
Such injustices should not stand.
Someone needs to step in and get Fitz out as in the Nifong case. Independent review of the case is glaringly called-for.
But don't look to AG Rip Van Gonzalez to intervene in the name of justice and truth.
Gonzalez still has two more years to go in his nap.

The sneer "well-heeled" comes through loud and clear.
