India-defence ^

Unidentified persons kidnapped four officials of Pakistan's Atomic Energy Commission from their office.

Five employees of the Commission were in their office at Banda Daud Shah tehsil in Karak district when four armed men entered the compound and demanded keys of some vehicles from the drivers there.

Then they took away four officials and three vehicles with them, local daily Dawn quoted police officials as saying. The office was established a few years back following discovery of high-grade uranium in the area.

Karak is a district of the North-West Frontier Province, Pakistan. It is situated to the south of Kohat District and on the north side of Bannu and Lakki Marwat districts. The region is close to the Afghan border and is located in the Al Qaida-Taliban dominated North West Frontier Province (NWFP).

Pakistan 'nuclear' kidnap foiled
Monday, 15 January 2007

Police in north-west Pakistan say they have foiled a bid to abduct six officials working for the Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission (PAEC). Police say the gang seized the staff south of Peshawar late on Sunday, but were stopped at a security checkpoint.

Three would-be kidnappers were shot dead in the gunfight, while two others were arrested. Police say they have yet to establish a motive. PAEC set up an office in the area after high-grade uranium was discovered.

City Bomb Defused In North-west Pakistan
January 15th 2007

Security agencies defused a time bomb near the parliament of Pakistan's North West Frontier Province (NWFP) in the city of Peshawar, news reports said Monday.

The 1.5-kilogramme improvised explosive device wrapped in a grocery bag was found Sunday outside the meteorological office by the parliament building, local police chief Saad Khan told the Dawn newspaper.

The bomb was removed by disposal experts, preventing an act of sabotage by "terrorists" to disturb peace in the provincial capital, Khan said. Nine explosions hit Peshawar in recent months, including a suicide attack. The NWFP government led by opposition parties has accused the country's intelligence agencies of trying to destabilize the province.

Six kidnapped employees of PAEC freed: Shootout leaves four dead

By Abdul Sami Paracha

KOHAT, Jan 15: Six employees of the Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission (PAEC), who had been kidnapped by armed men on Sunday night from their camp office near a uranium mining field in Karak district, were freed by police early on Monday morning after an encounter in which three kidnappers and a constable were killed.

Three vehicles taken away by the kidnappers were also found and a pick-up belonging to the kidnappers was seized.

Official sources told Dawn that only half an hour after the men had been kidnapped, at around 9:30am, a police team managed to find the place, near Gurguri, where the kidnappers had been hiding.

Police ordered the kidnappers who numbered 13 to surrender, but they opened fire. Police retaliated and the exchange of fire continued till about 2am, resulting in the death of police constable Naimatullah. Two of the three kidnappers killed in the exchange of fire were Abdus Sattar (of North Waziristan) and Inayatullah (of Buland Khel in Thall tehsil). Two kidnappers, Yaqoob Khan (of North Waziristan) and Sher Zaman (of Buland Khel in Thall tehsil), were injured. Other members of the gang managed to escape.

An injured kidnapper told interrogators that their local Taliban chief, Amir Ahmed Gul, had told them that they were going to attack a foreigners’ camp in Thall. He said they did not know that the chief would use them for kidnapping people. He said they were taking the kidnapped people and the vehicles to the seminary of Maulana Jalaluddin Haqqani near the cattle market in North Waziristan.

However, the interrogators said that the kidnappers were posing themselves as Taliban to misguide them.

The Teri and Banda Daud Shah police have registered a case under sections 302/324/353 of PPC and 5 Explosives Act 411/148/149/13 AO and 7 Anti-Terrorist Act. They have been also charged under section 17/3 of Haraba and 156.Police seized five hand-grenades, three Klashnikovs, four cellphones and Rs1,430 cash from the kidnappers.
