The Shawn Hornbbeck case seems stranger than we are being led to believe. The media has hauled out all the predictable talking heads, former FBI profilers (what a pack of losers!) and even a few dubious psychologists, as well. But the facts stand as they are: the Hornbeck boy had plenty of opportunities to escape, but he did not. Why not? The media heads would have us believe that he was everything from scared to brainwashed. But, the amount of time involved, over 4 years, throws all of that into question. After all, even fear has a shelf-life. There seems a lot more to all of this than we will ever be allowed to know.
One thing that seems to jump out is that the first boy was kidnapped at age 11. The next boy was kidnapped at age 11. I wonder if there were other boys who were kidnapped at age 11 by this guy, and we have yet to learn who they are - or were.
Well , Shawn was told his mother was dead & the new stepfather didn't want him .

If there wasn't any precedent, I'd agree with you. But the Stockholm Syndrome is real. Please don't fall into the same trap. Four years is a very long time and the age of 11 to 15 for a boy is huge.
He didn't want his parents to know about the sexual abuse and that he got aroused by a pervert. He would rather die.
The amount of time only cements the new paths of the brainwashed person. Don't underestimate the malleability of the human mind. Children especially so.
Have you ever been an 11- to 14-year-old abducted by a stranger, then beaten regularly, told your parents don't love you or want you, raped repeatedly, told you are a pos, etc., etc.? No? Then of course you wouldn't understand.
Have you ever heard of Steven Stayner? He was abducted at age 7 in 1972 by Kenneth Parnell, and was with Parnell for 8 years. He was sexually abused almost immediately after his kidnapping. Parnell introduced him as his son, "Dennis". Apparently, Steven had made friends with others also, but lied to keep up appearances in the hope that Parnell would leave him alone. After Parnell abducted another child, Timmy White, Stayner got up the courage to escape with Timmy while Parnell was at work. So how long do you think the shelf-life of fear is? Won't it be different for everyone, especially given each one's particular circumstances?
Have you considered that Shawn may have begun exhibiting signs of not being as much under control as he might have been in the past? That may have been why he took the younger boy. No telling what he might have planned to do to Shawn.
I am so angry at people wondering and accusing the poor kid than the 300# Monster kidnapper....

I seems that this young man hated living under parental authority so much that he preferred the 'freedom' living in a man's house...no schooling...no authority...no responsibility, etc..
So what is Devil tells the poor kid he is going to be killed and his family if he goes to the police. Plus the shame factor, they are told by their captor that families won't want them after they have been sullied. Dumb statement that you made.
We now know he was taken at gunpoint. we are talking an eleven year old boy (at the time he was taken) and none of us will know the whole story until this comes to trial.
