Something like this happened one time before during a NJ republican administration.
Old White Men-Washington, Jefferson, Franklin, and Religious Freedom, Taken out of NJ Curriculum

Kids can skip school on Buddha's birthday and 74 other holidays

...But state Sen. John Adler, a sponsor of the bill, cited a 2004 report by a state commission that recommended giving schools more flexibility to decide holiday observations. He questioned whether schools even bother to recognize the holidays....

I am a teacher in NJ, and I make a vow right here and now, I will continue to teach the children of our school about Memorial Day, Veterans Day and Thanksgiving.

They will have to fire me before I will forsake them. I suspect our entire community (I live in the community I teach in) feel the same way.

BTW that may be hard to do, Tenure goes both ways, and I have been teaching for 25 years.

One other thing, anyone who lives in NJ. GO to the next School Board meeting and let you feelings be known.

I just got off the phone with one of the members of our Board and he is ticked off big time.

And we thought we defeated communism. Just goes to show, it marched on, unimpeaded and unnoticed.

I'm kind of curious and I don't mean to put you on the spot, but what was the rationale behind this, a cost-saving measure? And if so, do you think it likely it will save any money?

You need to get people to call the Governor's office first.

Attendence at the next and future SB meetings will be needed if the Gov signs it so that your district doesn't drop the requirement for including the teaching of these.

With that said - good for you!!!!!!

To be followed by the new "Undocumented Immigrant Day" celebration and parade. There will be a unfunded mandate to cover this for three days during the school year...

From what I read about this issue, it sounds like it was dumped in another piece of legislation. I am willing to bet that half of those who voted for it were not even aware of it being in the bill.

Even the legislature in NJ is not that stupid.

I did read that the git who put this in claimed as an excuse that he did not think the schools were following the spirit of the law in regard to teaching about the holidays.

Now that is brillant logic, do away with it because the schools were not following the spirit of the law.

How about seeing that the law is enforced.

I am so ashamed of being a teacher in NJ right now, you would not believe it.
