Next target Tehran

The evidence is building up that President Bush plans to add war on Iran to his triumphs in Iraq and Afghanistan - and there is every sign, to judge by his extraordinary warmongering speech in Plymouth on Friday, that Tony Blair would be keen to join him if he were still in a position to commit British forces to the field.

"There's a strong sense in the upper echelons of the White House that Iran is going to surface relatively quickly as a major issue - in the country and the world - in a very acute way," said NBC TV's Tim Russert after meeting the president. This is borne out by the fact that Bush has sent forces to the Gulf that are irrelevant to fighting the Iraqi insurgents. These include Patriot anti-missile missiles, an aircraft carrier, and cruise-missile-firing ships.

Many military analysts see these deployments as signals of impending war with Iran. The Patriot missiles are intended to shoot down Iranian missiles. The naval forces, including British ships, train to pre-empt Iranian interference with oil shipments through the straits of Hormuz.

Excuse me, but they need to leave us alone. Our men have died as a result of their IEDs. If that's not provcation, nothing is.

Amen. How many of ours died due to Iran?

18 MONTHS? I'd think six weeks would do it. But then again, I'm not in the troop deployment business.

What's your prediction as to when Israel will initiate action towards Iran?

From a military standpoint, Iraq is like the axis of a wheel and Iran is part of the outer spoke. We are well positioned to take on the Iranians, Syrians and Turks.

Russia wont do a damn thing about it. They Russians are crippled and they know it and we know it and the Persians, Arabs, and Turks know it.

Would you prefer to wait until they conquer the nuke warhead/delivery system hurdle?

Iraq as it turned out had gone much farther in their development of a long range missile system than anyone had predicted, though we had a hint of it from the sat intel on their big new engine test stand just prior to the war. It wasn't set up to test bottle rockets.

South and all,

Ever wonder why AQ hasn't used nukes on us in some fashion yet . . . even a small, "dirty bomb?" The answer may lay in a new novel.

Fiction is fiction, but as we know, fiction writers often are dead on, just early (witness the book "Futility" in 1898 by Morgan Robertson who almost to the letter predicted the sinking of the "Titanic." His vessel had almost identical dimensions, speed at impact, number of passengers, month of sinking, . . . and the ship's name was the "Titan.")

Ok, I said that to say this. Read Nelson DeMille's most recent book, "Wildfire." DeMille is clearly no liberal. Like Michael Crichton, he does his research. The term "Wildfire" refers to a secret U.S. plan for an automatic nuclear response to several Middle Eastern cities if ANY nuke is EVER detonated in a U.S. city with so much of a hint that it was Islamic in origin. DeMille is careful to say this is obtained mostly from "online" sources, but adds that he personally believes some form of this exists.

Basically, if a nuke is detonated in a U.S. city, and there is no immediate "shut off" command, orders are automatically sent to a couple of SSBNs and, depending on the severity of the attack (one small "dirty" bomb or many), everything from Tehran and Riyadh to Mecca would be vaporized.

On the surface it seems a stretch, but if you look at our Cold War protocols, our nuke sub commanders had a series of steps whereby if they did not receive contact at regular intervals, and if other signals (such as radiation markers) indicated nuke war, they had independent lauch authority. Supposedly, Clinton changed this.

FWIW

"They have been buttbuddies with Iran for a long time."

You right, that is until a crude nuke threatens Russia. The Russians only carry on with the Iranians to serve their own interest.

They'd drop'em like a hot potato in a moments notice.

The clowns at the Guardian would rather wait for the terrorists to go nuclear.

They would then delight in reporting that the target, whether it be Israel, Europe, or the U.S., deserved it.

If you haven't read his previous book, "Night Fall," about TWA 800, you should read that first. Many of the plot twists and characters are a carryover from that book, which is excellent on its own.

I did read Nightfall. I went to look up some reviews of Wildfire and found one that said DeMille is a KOOK. Because this book makes conservatives look like a bunch of nuts. Sounds like a good book to me!

Great attitude. If we invade and nuke Iran, we're toast. Russia won't put up with it.

Absolute BS ... Iraq was Russia's bosom buddy as well. What did they do? Iran is also financing terrorism, remember Beslan? The Russians sure as hell do.

Until they hit us, we need to leave them alone.

They have hit us ... repeatedly.

1979 : Hostage Crisis
1983 : Beirut bombing (they supported the terrorists)
All the latest crap in Iraq. Iran is finacially supporting all insurgent groups trying to destablize Iraq.

Is that enough? We execute/jail people that pay for assasinations. War with Iran is the same situation raised up to the nation-state level.

Uhh, we didn't nuke Iraq.

And the only reason for that would be because they didn't use a nuke, chem or a bio weapon on us.

I admit, the "bad guys" in this one are "right wing" crazies, but in the context of uraveling it, you see that their "craziness" is, in fact, the result of a very real threat that even Detective Corey has a GREAT deal of sympathy for. (Remember, he still covets revenge against a Muslim terrorist from "Lion's Game.")
