Bush set for climate change U-turn

Downing Street says that belated US recognition of global warming could lead to a post-Kyoto agreement on curbing emissions

The Observer (UK)

George Bush is preparing to make a historic shift in his position on global warming when he makes his State of the Union speech later this month, say senior Downing Street officials. Tony Blair hopes that the new stance by the United States will lead to a breakthrough in international talks on climate change and that the outlines of a successor treaty to the Kyoto agreement, the deal to curb emissions of greenhouse gases which expires in 2012, could now be thrashed out at the G8 summit in June.

The timetable may explain why Blair is so keen to remain in office until after the summit, with a deal on protecting the planet offering an appealing legacy with which to bow out of Number 10. Bush and Blair held private talks on climate change before Christmas, and there is a feeling that the US President will now agree a cap on emissions in the US, meaning that, for the first time, American industry and consumers would be expected to start conserving energy and curbing pollution.

'We could now be seeing the beginning of a consensus on a post-Kyoto framework,' said a source close to the prime minister. 'President Bush is beginning to talk about more radical measures.'

The move will be seen as part of a wider repositioning of the Bush government after its comprehensive defeat in last autumn's mid-term elections.

A change of heart on the environment was signalled earlier this month when the US administration unexpectedly announced that polar bears were now an endangered species because their habitat

See #77. I've been aware of the Guardian's politics for 50 years so your insights aren't exactly news to me. I've also been a newspaperman and know how leakers are cultivated. I stand by my statement that the Guardian probably has very good sources inside 10 Downing Street -- but that doesn't mean they're necessarily approved by Blair.

So, you're saying a FOIA wasn't needed to bring this to the light?

Speechless

after its comprehensive defeat

What the he!! are these morons talking about?
Out of 17 states I've looked at so far:
19 RATS that are in the House ran unopposed.
4 RATS "won" with 50%. 3 of those "wins" constitute a total of 2476 votes.
1 RAT "won" with 49% for a total of 4404 votes.

That is a total of 25 RAT "wins" with a grand total of 6880 votes.

Then of course we have the great Senate race in VA that the RAT "won" by .5% with no way to have a recount, due to electronic voting and the black hole syndrome.

Another RAT Senator "won" by 2847 votes, or .7%

Comprehensive defeat? ... HA!
Someday, when the nausea subsides, I'll check out the other 33 states.

I think they should outlaw climate change, earthquakes, volcanic eruptions and tsunamis.

I'd just outlaw June, July, and August in the Northern Hemisphere.

Industry has grown in this country. It is the main thing that keeps our country's economy the strongest it has been, probably will be and will continue to be the largest and the best in the history of the WORLD.

I have to disagree.

One example: Take a look at the Big Three's current domestic market share versus what it was just 30 years ago.

I'm sort of old fashioned, and look at facts.

Sometimes facts are those pesky critters that can just ruin your whole day.

I don't have to wait awhile, I've seen what he's done (and failed to do) over the past 6 years.

Which is one of the reasons the republicans lost power. They promised to be conservatives but once they get into office they usually try to outliberal the liberals.

That might be, but woe betide! the scientist who gets even a little out of line in a specialty in which he is not properly credentialed. These pure thinkers are as territorial as any tree squirrel.

I'm with you 100% on your statements here. There are some folks who do not look at FACTS, and do not have the ability to use common sense, and reasoning to draw logical conclusions. They never understood the Associate Theorem in grade school Algebra I.

I'm staying out of this dogfight because I was suspended for trying to reason with a nit-wit last week.

Stay low, and keep yer powder dry.

'Til then, we need to speed up the building of nuclear power plants,, and don't subsidize and patronize the alternative energy freaks and activists that carry on with this PassionPlay in public daily, in both parties.

Ditto that. Well said.

I think we may be on to something here. Now if we could just outlaw windbag politicians...er...er...wait a second...now that's impossible...when God kicked Adam and Eve out of the Garden he said the lasses would experience bumby roads in childbirth and we would all be subjected to windbag politicians.

Perhaps I shouldn't be so cynical. Bush hasn't even given his speech just yet.

His policy concerning the massive increase in SS spending to give seniors prescription benefits.

The recent revelation concerning the secret SS deal with the Mexican government that allows illegal aliens to collect SS benefits.

His determination to allow Illegal aliens to be granted amnesty and be allowed to remain in the US.

His attempt to appoint two liberals to the SC.

Do you even know what Socialism is?

The NYT puts a liberal spin on its leaks and many are not true. Let's see some source documents before believing everything that is in print, especially from a Left wing rag.
