What was it like in 1959 ?

In early 2004, according to Roll Call, Mr. Murtha "reportedly leaned on U.S. Navy officials to sign a contract to transfer the Hunters Point Shipyard to the city of San Francisco."

Laurence Pelosi, nephew of House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, at the time was an executive of the company which owned the rights to the land.

I remember Hunter's Point as a collection of quonset huts as "military housing", a small PX and something resembling a simple officers club. There was a playground with "monkey bars" that used redwood chips in place of sand. Lots of nice pine trees. The neighborhood right next to the housing area included some small residences. My recollection is they were somewhat "run down".

I recall wanting to surprise my mom by coloring the Easter eggs. I could read the directions at that point. Silly me, I put fresh eggs in the glass custard cups, placed the dye "pill" on the egg shell and dribbled some water over it. I was old enough to have ever seen it done "right" on the previous Easter.

I had one lasting frustration from that time frame as well. I had found a new friend and we were playing with some flexible, colored plastic "sticks" with half-round openings on each end. They were designed to connect the end to the body. His parents had to "go somewhere", so he headed out around lunch time. I went to the "monkey bars" to play. While fiddling around on the top, I lost my grip and landed hard on my back. When I got up it was turning dark. I returned home, but I could never remember the location of my friend's "hut" again.

Shortly after that time, we moved to Imperial Beach (Holly Ave) where I had my 4th birthday. Some months later we took a train to San Francisco and boarded a Navy ship for my dad's new assignment in Honolulu. I turned 5 during the transit.
