The news on the local TV stations says that defense attorney for Finnerty sent the subpoena to Nifong's office to be served.

Okay, got it. As I said, Nifong has proved to the defense that he is not to be trusted and would probably rather eat ground glass than have this woman testify, so it's not surprising that the defense took the precaution of having their own subpoena served when the opportunity presented itself, seeing as how Nifong has kept her in hiding and away from defense lawyers and subpoenas for nine months.

I wonder if they tried to serve Mangum when she was in the hospital having the baby and cops were there guarding her from any outside contact?

They sent a "process server" to hunt her down and "SERVE" the subpeona IN PERSON. The server could have been a Sheriff on his own time. Not unusual. My attorney has been using the same guy for years.
