I'm thinking Meehan goes states evidence and says that Nifong told him to withhold the DNA evidence or Meehan would never get any more forensic work. Which is probably pretty close to the truth.

Yes, he could do that. His testimony wasn't perfectly clear that Nifong told him to leave the exculpatory data out of the report, but he got as close to it as he could.

Nifong recusing himself could ease Meehan's concerns regarding Nifong's retaliatory measures if he were to fully testify against him to save his own skin.
