Pelosi backtracks, now says Samoa NOT exempt - FOX

According to FoxNews, pelosi now says Samoa is INCLUDED..

Her trickle-up theory apparently won't go over very well with the people there, as their representative had this to say (pay attention to para 2) regarding the devastation of the Samoan economy if this goes through:

"In a statement in response today, Faleomavaega (American Samoa delegate) said "despite recent claims made by the Washington Post which suggest that American Samoa is exempt from the federal minimum wage process, I wish to set the record straight." He says since 1956, the Wage and Hour Division of the US Department of Labor has conducted Special Industry Committees every two years in American Samoa to determine minimum wage increases.

"While these Industry Committees have been phased out in other US Territories due to their more diversified economies, American Samoa continues to be a single industry economy. In fact, more than 80% of our private sector economy is dependent either directly, or indirectly, on two U.S. tuna processors, Chicken of the Sea and StarKist. As has been repeatedly stated at our Special Industry Committees, a decrease in production or departure of one or both of the two canneries in American Samoa could devastate the local economy resulting in massive layoffs and insurmountable financial difficulties," the Congressman says.

"For this very reason, I do not support efforts to apply mainland minimums to American Samoa at this time. The truth is the global tuna industry is so competitive that it is no longer possible for the federal government to demand mainland minimum wage rates for American Samoa without causing the collapse of our economy and making us welfare wards of the federal government."

I should have mentioned that that's a relatively recent thing. We used to have the so called industry commitees and the fed minimum wage didn't apply to certain sectors. But those exemptions started to get phased out about 15 years ago.

Those little 2 ounce packets in tin foil are $2.50.

Yes, but that is the fancy, schmancy stuff that has seasonings, etc. (i.e. processed, special packaging). I can still buy tuna in the can almost two for a dollar at Aldi's!!!

You obviously don't realize that is 100 "working hours" ...

Or in Senator Byrd's world, 100 waking hours.

Did she have a similar concern with industry in the Northern Marianas which currently has a similar exemption from the national minimum wage? No, the Northern Marianas is having its wage gradually increased up to the minimum in the rest of the country. The question is why is that good for the Marianas and not for Samoa, or more to the point, why is it good for her supporters in Starkist to keep Samoan wages down but Marianas' wages don't matter for any of her supporters.

I can accept the fact that wages are lower in the island territories. I don't like the blatent politics of changing the Marianas' wages while keeping Samoan wages down for Starkist.

Looks like Pelosi is more cold hearted than I thought. Think of all the poor people she'll be sentencing to a life of poverty in American Samoa while she lives in the lap of luxury.

(You can not fool me, I know who will wind up paying the new wages, and it ain't Starkist or Chicken of the sea.)

I'm not buying tuna anymore. I don;t want to hurt the poor Samoans, but I am not paying the already high cost of tuna to help with democrat corruption.

If only we allowed minimum wages to be determined solely by the states. then the states would get competitive, much like they do with tax rates, and all the red states that actually UNDERSTAND economics would get all the businesses. Then some of you trapped in Mass, NY, NJ could move to the red states with us!

(all in good humor, my Blue State FRiends...)

they've only used 23 hours and 24 mins so far..

She must have alloted herself more time-outs than any quadruple overtime NBA game. At this rate, March Madness will be over before her 100 hours (dare I say the NBA playoffs?).

"The territories (with the exception of Guam) can't afford to impose this higher minimum wage. Their standard of living is below that of stateside Americans."

I am not sure about Guam and the CNMI, but your statement is not necessary correct for Puerto Rico and the USVI. Puerto Rico has an advanced and diversified economy and the USVI's mostly tourism related economy pays well above federal minimums already. Having said that, I am opposed to federally mandated wage floors.

Yup, that's how I'm reading it.

The current (2004) law can be read here and the complete 2007 legislation (very small) can be read here, although I posted the entire text of it already.

As much as I hate to say it, I think Nancy Pants is getting a bum rap here, or else is just now getting a rap for something that she may have slipped into the minimum wage law years ago.
