..and since the Samoans are so close to the Equator they don't need the minimum pay increase to heat their homes.

Also, under a package of energy measures to be unveiled Friday, oil and gas companies would be barred from future Gulf lease sales unless they agree to renegotiate flawed 1998-99 leases that allowed them to avoid federal royalty payments.

That's can't be legal. The government is going to blackmail the companies if they hold the government to the leases they signed with the companies?

The justice department needs to take a serious look at this and the politicians pushing for it.

The bill also calls for a $9 a barrel "resource conservation" fee on oil, and a $1.25 per million Btu fee on natural gas, for production in the Gulf as long as market prices remain at more than $34.73 a barrel for oil and $4.34 per million Btu for gas.

In other words, since high fuel prices are hurting the economy, they want to add additional taxes. Just ignore the facts that the government already taxes these companies on their profits, and the government already gets greater revenues from the higher market prices.

Ignore the fact that people who own energy stocks and are making large sums of money from them already get taxed at higher tax rates because they are earning more money.

Obviously, we can't have anyone earning over the poverty level. People who are self sufficient don't want the government trying to run their lives, so those people must be punished.

If this passes, the government is basically saying that they are not bound by the legal agreements they enter into. These politicians are advocating clear tyranny. The fact that people are cheering this like the oil companies are the ones in the wrong is disgraceful.

The Dems don't care. As long as they get the $ for their Social Engineering.

And so by creating & maintaining a 'Hovel' social group that is almost totally dependent and conditioned to vote automatically for them the Liberals/Democrats has enthroned themselves to be Kings & Lords over Americans who dont or unable (or cant) think or work for themselves.

Thereby imposing Socialism, Cummunism and Fascism!

Socialism: everyone owns everything and the Govt gives you everything),
Communism: Quote by Hitlery "We are going to take things from you FOR THE COMMON GOOD". Communism is whereby everyone owns everything, the Govt gives you everything and the Govt CAN take anything from you anything at any thing without compensation or just cause and
Fascism: We know what is Good for you and with our propaganda arm (the oh so biased Mainstream Media, the Unions and the Teachers Unions) we will educate you on how we are doing great things for you and protect you from the Evils of such radical groups such as Christians, Homophobes, Anti-Science groups such as Creationists, Anti-Choice and the very dangerous guns fanatic groups!!

Well taht will certainly increase domestic supply and lessen our reliance on Middle East oil which is going to become a big, big problem in the near future when the dems surrender in the Middle East and Iran exerts some good ole hegemony over the region.

Life is good!

The oil and gas industry argues that the leases amount to a contract and should be honored as written, although five companies recently agreed to pay royalties on future production from such leases. More than 50 companies have declined to renegotiate.

We recently (July 06) bought a used truck from a local new car dealer. They wrote the contract. We signed it, their sales manager signed it and we took delivery. A few days later they discovered they had made a $4000 mistake on the sale. They called us and told us we had to bring it back and re-do the deal. We told them no. They threatened us, they screamed on the phone. They said we would go to jail. They threatened to hold up the paper work, tags, registration, loans papers, etc. Which they did for a month and a half. We still have the truck, tags and registration and the credit union has the title. The sales manager and the head saleman were fired. The owner of the dealership called and apologized profusely. He said his now ex-employees had tried to cheat an honest person and it blew up in their faces........

I wonder what "current high levels" mean, with oil down to 52 bucks yesterday.

I think that actually puts it below the price at which we were losing revenue on Clinton's bad oil lease deals.

It wasn't really a mistake. At the time the leases were signed, oil was really cheap, and the deal was a good one for the government. It only turned into a "bad" deal when the oil prices went way up and it turned out Clinton's team hadn't put a windfall price bump into the lease agreement.

Lawmakers of both parties have expressed anger at the refusal of oil and gas companies to rework the 1998-99 leases that were issued without a provision that required royalty payments if oil and gas prices soared — as they have in recent years.

The government messed up and now it wants a do-over. What a bunch of whiners.

"Contracts? We don't need no steenking contracts"

Sigh. If only I could do that with the contractor who built my house. 'Hello? Yes, you built my house... about 8 years ago. Well, the contract was flawed. I think I should have done better, so... I want more money back. Say 20%?'

Removing domestic production incentives (tax breaks) will increase dependence on Middle Eastern (Jihadist) sources and their leverage over the US.
