If you're a Republican, be worried, very worried... [Rich Lowry]
...because Rahm Emanuel is very shrewd, per this Ignatius column. Emanuel is focusing on what would probably be the most politically wise way for Dems to try to stop the surge:
Rather than try to restrict funds for the troops (which he sees as a political blunder that would delight Republicans), Emanuel instead favors a proposal by Rep. John Murtha to set strict standards for readiness which would make it hard to finance the troop surge in Iraq without beefing up the military as a whole. The idea is to position the Democrats as friends of the military, even as they denounce Bush's Iraq policy.

I'm a Republican and I'm not worried.
So what's the downside?
I'm an American...and I AM worried!
What me worry?
Lowry is such a whiney little bitch.
If the Rats vote to create strict standards for readiness, they will also be on the hook to fund these proposals.
I hope they do this, it will mean increasing the size of the military which is far too small for current tasks and threats.
"set strict standards for readiness..."
According to the Clintonistas, we are ready to fight two major wars in different parts of the globe. And that was before Bush expanded the size of the military.
I guess he assumes that our services will support anyone who throws money at them, and dont know the difference between actual support and shameless pandering.
Lowry needs to learn that the military know who their friends are, and there is nothing to fear.
Well said, PD.
At least then we'll get to finish the job once and for all.
Yup......A Metrosexual type.....
The underlying article clearly indicates that the 'rats want the War to be a failure so that they can become the dominant political party. Hence their de facto alliance with the enemy who is killing our soldiers. Dead American soldiers will translate into 'rat seats in Congress and a 'rat President.
If they actually cared about our troops at all, then they would either support the war or cutoff funding. Neither helps them politically, so they are adopting a strategy of isolating the President and doing everything possible to make sure we lose.
That job will not be done until the enemy within is also "dealt" with
Rush talking about this now
Rush just said the same thing!
Let the Dimocraps propose strengthening the military overall. Then let the Republicans outbid them. Let's take turns until we're back to 18 active divisions. Let's see which party's base abandons them first. Some of the Democrats were elected on "bring the troops home" platforms. How will the people that voted for them support boosting the military? Not very well if at all.
We will have to strike before a week or so passes or the "enemy within" will start to retreat again, like they did after 911.
And how much time did Mr. Lowry spend bashing the President and the republicans for the past year or so?
Exactly...the military knows who their friends are in DC and it ain't the rats.
Why wait ... no time like the present
