(ID Congressman Bill) Sali Proposes Repeal of Gravity to Protest Minimum Wage Hike
TV 8 ^ | 1-12-2007

COEUR D'ALENE, Idaho (AP) - Angered by the passage of a bill to increase the federal minimum wage, Idaho Congressman Bill Sali offered a symbolic proposal to abolish the law of gravity.

Getting rid of the pesky force that attracts objects to one another would lower obesity rates, the freshman Republican argues.

Sali says he was trying to make a point that laws to dictate wages and reduce gravity would both defy - quote- "natural laws."

The House voted 315-116 to raise the federal minimum wage to $7.25 an hour. Sali responded with his "Obesity Reduction and Health Promotion Act."

Sali says "Obviously, it was a facetious notion to suspend the laws of gravity."

Sali voted against the increase in the minimum wage, saying it's not tied to how much someone's work is worth.

Good Point. The Honorable Opposition does have a nice ring to it.

Yes, min wage kills jobs. I wonder how long before gas stations stop taking cash and all go to "pay at pump"?

Get rid of that $6 hr granny making change 4 hours a day to make ends meet.

Several years ago I learned what kills jobs. A friend of mine was thinking of starting a one-man business and part of his research involved talking to the operators of similar ventures. His biggest concern was red tape, so he asked them how onerous the government paperwork was. Every person he asked gave him the same answer: "You'll be fine, just as long as you don't hire any employees."

Actually, I had a much worse job; I worked for a full year sorting laundry in a V.A. Hospital in Martinsburg, Wva where two big trailer loads came in each day, some from DC hospitals.

Bloody diapers, used syringes, vomit, urine, feces, unknown matter, etc went flying through the air into weighing baskets and into huge washers and dryers or ironers.

It was two months after I left there that the stench finally left me.

Why not? Who else in the GOP has the one... make that two... qualifications so lacking in the current "hopefuls"? There isn't enough brass among the lot of them to make a .22 short!

I think the advent of RFID tech coupled with the minimum wage increase is going to make such automation happen faster.

I find I can use the home improvement store's rapid check out lines faster than the manned traditional stations. You have ONE employee to handle four lines.

How soon before unions start opposing the self checkk out lines?

If I could have a AI receptionist who could do the phone transfering to the right person I could save more money. I just don't see the "press 1 for" systems being good for customer cultivation.

I can see the future marketing, "we have all automated check out lines, NO IDIOT EMPLOYEES TO RUIN YOUR CHECKOUT EXPERIENCE!"

We can order a pizza online without any need for human interaction.

If they can automate handmade pizza and eliminate the humans other than for delivery then we REALLY have a profit point.

You are right. It is tough to make ends meet when you are unemployed. Taxing businesses does not create jobs!

He should have gone after Murphy's law, personally...the Dims would have supported it.

IS THE WORLD GETTING YOU DOWN TODAY?

 CHEESEBURGER IN PARADISE

Tried to amend my carnivorous habits.
Made it nearly seventy days,
Losin' weight without speed, eatin' sunflower seeds,
Drinkin' lots of carrot juice and soakin' up rays.

But at night I'd have these wonderful dreams
Some kind of sensuous treat.
Not zucchini, fettuccini, or bulgur wheat,
But a big warm bun and a huge hunk of meat.

Cheeseburger in paradise.
Heaven on earth with an onion slice.
Not too particular, not too precise.
I'm just a cheeseburger in paradise.

Heard about the old time sailor men,
They eat the same thing again and again;
Warm beer and bread they say could raise the dead.
Well it reminds me of the menu at a Holiday Inn.

Times changed for sailors these days.
When I'm in port I get what I need;
Not just Havanas or banana or daiquiris,
But that American creation on which I feed!

Cheeseburger in paradise
Medium rare with mustard'd be nice
Heaven on earth with an onion slice.
Not too particular, not too precise
I'm just a cheeseburger in paradise.

I like mine with lettuce and tomato
Heinz 57 and french fried potatoes
Big kosher pickle and a cold draft beer
Well, good God Almighty which way do I steer
For my cheeseburger in paradise

Makin' the best of every virtue and vice.
Worth every damn bit of sacrifice
To get a cheeseburger in paradise;
To be a cheeseburger in paradise.
I'm just a cheeseburger in paradise.

I like mine with lettuce and tomato
Heinz 57 and french fried potatoes
Big kosher pickle and a cold draft beer
Well, good God Almighty which way do I steer

I think a better one would be passing a bill stating that Pie are round.

IIRC one state actually passed legislation along those lines about 100 years ago.

I think that made it 3 and 1/8 because that's what it says in the Bible.

You Sines have always been like that, when will this sectarian conflict end?!?

Stick to the topic. Don't go off on some tangent, now.
