Could the President use this as an excuse to veto the legislation? Not that he will, mind you, because it wouldn't be very "new toneish".

Some Republicans who voted in favor of the minimum-wage bill were particularly irritated to learn yesterday -- after their vote -- that the legislation did not include American Samoa.

Gosh, 80 Republicans voted "yes" on a bill they didn't actually read. I'm shocked.

House rules are to publish the full legislations 72 hours before a vote, but I believe they waived that rule for this one, saying it was "just like" the one voted on before, but without the add-ons.

Apparently it wasn't the same.

My outrage is tempered by the fact that I don't want to complain about A.S. not having minimum wage, I want to complain about the rest of us HAVING it. If the result of my screaming "hypocrisy" is just an amendment in the Senate to put A.S. into the same state as the rest of us, I will feel like I've won a battle but lost the war.

Better to have them be the only place not infected by the minimum wage bill, so we can point to it as a shining example for the rest of us.

I just called his office and told him to keep doing what he's doing.

Happens all the time. Not to defend the Republicans too much, but I remember in the days of Tip O'Neill when the Democrats would formulate legisltation in closed-door sessions (closed to the minority), then on the day of voting, plop a 12-inch stack of papers on the Republicans' desks and say "here's the legislation - we're voting on it in 30 minutes!"

"House Republicans yesterday declared "something fishy" about the major tuna company in House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's San Francisco district being exempted from the minimum-wage increase that Democrats approved this week."

Call for hearings and don't stop for two years.

What do you bet the Republicans will just drop it and it will fade away as all RAT scandals do.

I'm sure it does. In those cases, a responsible Representative would vote no. If I agreed to everything that crossed by desk based on a title or a soundbite, I'd get fired.

Good idea, and while they're at it let's find out why Pelosi is allowed to skate on her family's business in the vineyards and getting away with NOT allowing her workers to become unionized? Hypocrisy is rampant in the California media's silence on this issue. Imagine if a Republican owned restaurants and vineyards and would not allow their workers to be union members? Isn't that one of the reasons the leftists hate Walmart?

I believe Heinz actually owns the Tuna plant in Pago Pago, and most of the people that work in it are Western Samoans who are shipped over for three month stints. They really mess up the place with garbage they just chuck on the street. The wages there are such that the American Samoans turn their noses up at the minimum wage offered at the plant. Somewhere in the order of 6-9 thousand of the American Samoan are working for the US Government in one form or another.

Pelosi is a racist. She is trying to hold back Samoans from making a decent wage and getting ahead.

That's the angle I wish the Republicrats would take.

Has she attempted to defend this? Isn't there going to be a lawsuit with some other manufacturer, perhaps those who can smoked oysters, claiming equal protection?

Did she say CULTURE OF CORRUPTION ? And to think she was going to clean the swamp.

Sounds like the "madam" of the house will be doing her corruption out in the open, just like she promised.

Pelosi hasn't been lobbied, but her husband owns a $17 million position in H.J.Heinz Corporation, which owns 74.5% of Del Monte, which owns StarKist Tuna after purchasing it from Heinz in 2003.

See the post by Caliban at this page.

Billionaire owner of Snapple, Arby's, and TJ cinnimon, Nelson Peltz is currently locked into a proxy battle with H.J. Heinz Corporations board of directors. When Heinz sold StarKist to Del Monte, the terms resulted in Heinz stockholders becoming 74.5% owners of the new Del Monte. Peltz, H.J. Heinz' principle non-family shareholder, is attempting to increase his influence within the company by obtaining another proxy seat. To better his cause, Peltz has enlisted the help of business/real estate investor Paul Pelosi, Nancy's husband. Paul Pelosi's portfiolio includes 3 huge Napa Valley properties in addition to a 17 million dollar position in the H.J. Heinz corporation.

Gotta just love the party of the little guy, don't ya?
