Rep. Ron Paul has filed papers in Texas to create a presidential exploratory committee that will allow him to raise money, the Associated Press reported late Thursday. The nine-term congressman from southeast Texas was the Libertarian nominee for president in 1988 and received more than 400,000 votes, the AP reported. This time he plans to run as a Republican.

He left his teeth out for that photo?

Not surprising, he left his brain out in this speech and his spine out with his attitude.

He won't make a dent.

I predict he'll cut and run after the Hawkeye Cauci.

I think it's stupid. The reason the Constitution doesn't authorize an Air Force is because only birds flew then. It doesn't authorize a space agency, either.

What Neil Armstrong did was unconstitutional, dammit, in the Ron Paul world.

JFK's challenge to put a man on the moon before the end of the 60's would have met a serious challenge, and undoubtedly folks of Ron Paul's mindset would have fought the constitutional amendment all the way.

I don't think we needed a constitutional amendment to give Charles Schulz a certificate and shiny piece of metal, either.

Trivia question: Who was the only US Representative to vote against giving Charles Schulz, the creator of the Peanuts cartoon, the Congressional Gold Medal posthumously?

What part of Article I Section 8 gives Congress the authority to expend government funds to award such posthumous medals? Even given the most stretchy expansion of the elastic clause, I don't see it. To be sure, if Congress decided to discuss the issue 'off the clock', and fund such a medal entirely through private donations, there wouldn't be anything unconstutional about that, but I don't think that's what they were trying to do.

I'll admit, though, that what I really would have liked would have been for Ron Paul to push for extended discussion of the medal, since Congress probably spent less on the medal than it would normally spend during the time they discussed it. Too bad Congress can't spend more of its time on such things.

The more the merrier and the 1-2% will be split: Bob Barr, Ron Paul and likely Tom Tancredo.

The Three Stooges. I've never shared this here, but I've always been a fan of slapstick comedies.

Do people actually support this guy and think he is presidential material? Honestly?

Or is this just another way to split the GOP?

It won't split the GOP, because he'll get hundreds of votes in every state primary.

I'm guessing he just wants to get in the limelight for 15 minutes before heading off.

Another trivia question: How many sitting representatives of the US House were elected to the Presidency?

Sure, but that's what Article V is all about. I'm not sure when Congress appropriated money for the first long-term Air Force projects, but I don't think it was before 1950. Once it became apparent that the Soviet Union was going to be a threat, would there have been any difficulty passing a Constitutional amendment authorizing long-term appropriations for the Air Force?

If Congress isn't bound by the Constitution in such things, what basis is there for holding it to the Constitution in others?

I thought that Rep. Paul was trying to merge the Constitution Party with the Libertarian Party. Now, he has decided to possibly run as a Republican candidate for President in '08? What are his thoughts on illegal immigration? Is he for open borders? What are his views on all of the social issues (abortion, gun laws, gay marriage, etc.)?

A further split, Romney, mccain, and Giuliani. Given those choices, I'll happily vote for Tancredo.

supercat, if you want to support Ron Paul, be my guest. Like I say, I voted for him in November.

Disband NASA, the Air Force, and all our military satellites. The important thing is have this country forever trapped into the world of the late 1700s unless we're forever amending the Constitution INSTEAD OF UNDERSTANDING THE PRINCIPLES IT WAS SETTING OUT.

Most here scold the libertarians for not working for what they want inside the Republican party. Well, Ron Paul did.

Well said. Just last week there was a whole thread about how we shoudl abandon the libertarian party and work within the GOP. Of course, the RINOS always lie about why we should support their candidates. It's not a surprise tha the "come work within the GOP" line was a lie too.

forever amending the Constitution

Imagine that. Actually amending the consitution instead of ignoring it. How horrible.

Surrendering to the enemy is not working within the GOP. You folks might want to try to DNC with that message.

The consitution doesn't authorize specific rifles, cannon, or gunpowder either. It's all part of the military which is authorized.

Have you ever noticed how the "true" conservatives like to claim that Bush-bots would vote for anyone as long as they have an R next to their name?

LOL! They would vote for anyone, even a surrender whack-job, as long as he's one of theirs.

Surrendering to the enemy isn't exactly the road to victory either.
