CA: A future of bigger, costlier government (Courtesy of aRnie and the Ds in California)

In his refreshingly short State of the State speech Tuesday evening, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger boasted of his commitment to transcend partisan divides and to work together, Republicans and Democrats, toward achieving a California agenda. The state government can avoid the partisan gridlock of Washington, D.C., and move forward, he said, "because the future does not wait."

While those words make for decent political rhetoric, we were less than heartened by the big and bold agenda the governor detailed. ...

The mountain he has pledged to climb with the Legislature looks a lot like a mountain of debt and regulation. If this is the alternative to partisanship, we'll settle for gridlock.

In November, Californians voted on an infrastructure-bond package of $42.7 billion. The governor outlined another $43.3 billion in bond spending that he would like to see approved this year. This level of borrow-and-spend is beyond belief.

For instance, the governor called for the Legislature to spend even more on education, which already consumes nearly half the state budget. ...

As a bone to conservatives, the governor rightly called for more accountability by public schools through providing ways for parents to access financial and spending data. He also called for more charter schools. But he fell far short of calling for the best accountability around: competition, such as through tuition vouchers.

The governor promised that the budget proposal he will release today will reduce the structural budget deficit and that taxes will not be raised. Yet his newly proposed health-care plan dramatically raises taxes on smaller businesses, hospitals and doctors, adds new regulations and threatens to create a new government bureaucracy. The governor's anti-tax rhetoric is even more suspect when one considers the high levels of debt he keeps creating. ... snip ...

A debtless society is a nice dream. But its one without a place for government, whose existence depends on income exaction.

As Ca. goes,so goes the Congress ala socialised medicine, socialised education and higher taxation. In one election, the voters nationwide have become the wussies, pacificists and socialists the Dems have been praying for since '94. To be frank, Americans do not have the spine to stop any of these social expermiments or stand up for winning a war militarily anymore.
