40,000 is a lot out of a country which, at the time, had a population less than 2million!

Thanks for proving my point. Only 40,000. Ireland is a very small country.I think for a country whose men weren't required to go (or,perhaps,were even forbidden by their government to go) and had a population of males between the ages of 18 and 40 that might have numbered about 200,000,I'd say that that's a pretty respectable figure.
