WASHINGTON (AP) --
In a concession to the Senate's new Democratic majority, four of President Bush's appeals court appointees have asked to have their nominations withdrawn, Republican officials said Tuesday.
These officials said that William Haynes, William Myers and Terrence Boyle had all decided to abandon their quest for confirmation. Another nominee, Mike Wallace, let it be known last month that he, too, had asked Bush to withdraw his nomination.

Exactly.
But the administration hadn't had the guts to confront the Libs when they had Republican majorities in COngress.
There is no chance they will do it now.
My guess is they were ASKED to withdraw.

I hope the so-called perfect conservatives are happy with their new Democrat Congress.
Why are you blaming conservatives for the Republicans' defeat? In my cousin's district (I was visiting him during the election), a Democrat won in a seat that had been vacated by a Republican. The Democrat's ads were all about the war in Iraq. I'm sorry to say it, but the Iraq war - as important as it is - is not popular. My reading is that the election turned on the Iraq war. That's not unusual. Wars lose popularity as they drag on. Flame me if you will, but I'm reporting what I think is the truth. I'm not cut and run - but I also don't think it's fair to blame conservatives for the election results.

What is particularly galling is to hear the so called Reagan conservatives demanding all or nothing from the President. Ditto that!!!!!

The libs in both parties have done a pretty good job of depopulating the Fourth Circuit.
Looks like this district could wind up more liberal than it was when Billy Jeff left office.

In the interest of "fair and balanced", here's the counter list to Peach's "Please just link to me because I've been spammed all over the forum" list.
Do Republicans really support smaller government? Here are some interesting facts:
- Republicans controlled both Houses of Congress from 1995 through 2001 during which time the federal budget grew from $1.4 trillion to $2.1 trillion (about $100 billion annually). [source]
- Since Republicans took control of the House in 1995, federal discretionary spending has grown by a rate of about 7% annually. The number of earmarks lawmakers have put in the spending bills to steer federal funds to their districts has also grown. By one estimate, between fiscal years 2001 and 2002, they increased from about 6,300 to 8,300, or 32%. [source]
- Since the Republicans took over Congress in 1995, the budget has grown by 50%. [source]
- Even though we now have GOP control of the White House, the Senate and the House, the bloated $2.25 trillion federal government has grown more rapidly on President Bush's watch than it did under Clinton. [source]
- Social welfare programs under George W. Bush have grown by $96 billion in just two years, versus $51 billion under six years of Clinton, according to economist Stephen Moore of the Club for Growth. [source]
- Pork-barrel spending rose by 21.6% from 2001 to 2003 according to CAGW President Tom Schatz. [source]
- When Ronald Reagan became president in 1981 the federal budget was $680 billion. When he left office in 1989 the federal budget was $1.14 trillion -- an increase of 67%. [source]
- The last Republican presidents to preside over a decrease in federal spending were Warren G. Harding (who served from 1921 until his death in 1923) and Calvin Coolidge (who served from 1923 until 1929). During that time federal spending decreased 44% from $5 billion to $2.85 billion. However, spending began increasing again in 1928 before Calvin Coolidge left office. [source]

I agree. And the most conservative Democrat is still far more liberal than the most liberal Republican.

Keep pretending it will be better under the Democrats.Where have I said it would be?
You are the one saying GOP critics want it all, when all they wanted was the GOP to maintain some semblence of its former values.
You are the one claiming I think it will be better under the Democrats, when I and most other GOP critics have never said anything of the sort.
So you are debating by putting words into my mouth. I, on the other hand, am pointing out what should be clear - that the GOP squandered their power on petty pursuits of the pork barrel, which makes it pretty tough to convince swing voters that continuing GOP control of government is critical for our nations future.
If the GOP truly felt that way, they would have never sold out for trinkets the way they did.

You better pray, then, that McCain doesn't win the primary.
If he does, I'm writing in my favorite Republican candidate anyway.
McCain or Giuliani just gives a liberal judiciary, anyhow.

I agree that the war was probably the primary factor in the war. And sadly, Republicans didn't frame the issues very well.
However, when I talk about "perfect" conservatives, I'm responding to those freepers who post on this forum day and night why various Republican candidates aren't worthy of re-election.
Instead of working to increase our Republican majority, they actually worked on freepers and encouraged them to stay at home and not vote or encouraged them to vote third party (which has no chance of winning anything).

I gather you haven't seen the posts on this forum in the last six months or more where freepers advocated either sitting home or condemning various Republican candidates as unworthy of re-election.

I hope the so-called perfect conservatives are happy with their new Democrat Congress. Republicans weren't perfect, but they were 100% better than what we're stuck with. Maybe some freepers need a reminder about compromise and not getting 100% of what they want out of any politician. This clip is from Reagan's autobiography: When I began entering into the give and take of legislative bargaining in Sacramento, a lot of the most radical conservatives who had supported me during the election didn't like it. "Compromise" was a dirty word to them and they wouldn't face the fact that we couldn't get all of what we wanted today. They wanted all or nothing and they wanted it all at once. If you don't get it all, some said, don't take anything. I'd learned while negotiating union contracts that you seldom got everything you asked for. And I agreed with FDR, who said in 1933: 'I have no expectations of making a hit every time I come to bat. What I seek is the highest possible batting average.' If you got seventy-five or eighty percent of what you were asking for, I say, you take it and fight for the rest later, and that's what I told these radical conservatives who never got used to it. ~~ Ronald Reagan, in his autobiography, An American Life . Here RR is talking more about corrupt union contracts. We are talking national politics. Ask RR if a portion was only necessary why did he walk away at Reykjavik? That was all or nothing & we got ALL. Don't fall for this compromised crapola - that's nothing more than giving these puke liberals what they want. Just let your CONgress critter know that if he wants your vote he had better put on his TRUE conservative hat or take his ungodly pension & retire.

So if you want to blame someone, blame the pork-eating pubbies. Don't blame the voters. You are exactly right. The voters, nor the people who stayed home, nor any poster on FR, is to blame for this.
The blame squarely falls on Bush, Rove, Mehlman, and the GOP leadership for sowing a loss over a span of 2 years. One should feel very let down by them.
To: Peach
I love how that list is full of executive orders (hello, Bush was
not voted out of office), things that absolutely
did not happen (Constitutional amendment saying marriage is between one man and one woman), and things that would have been passed even with 100% Dems (Teacher Protection Act).
I also love how the insanely bloated healthcare legislation package is broken down to highlight only some select bits which can safely be presented in a positive light. I guarantee you that you will be able to do the same thing with any of the major democrat bills that get passed this time around. Never mind that healthcare package was one of the most anti-conservative monsters of wasteful government socialism to date.
Are you honestly going to tell me that that stuff is what you had in mind when you went to the polls the previous election?
To: Peach
Great job...on everything!!!!!!
