SOMALIA: EUROPEAN UNION CRITICISM OF U.S. RAID ON SOUTH (against al-Qaeda militants in Somalia)
ADNK ^ | 9 Jan 2007

Posted on 01/09/2007 9:01:10 AM PST by IrishMike

European Union human rights and development commissioner Louis Michel's spokesman, Amadeu Altafaj Tardiu, has strongly criticised the United States military's airstrikes on Tuesday against alleged al-Qaeda linked militants in southern Somalia which it is feared killed many. "This kind of incident is not particularly conducive to improving the longterm situation.. and would seem to confirm that the conflict in Somalia will continue for a long time to come," Tardiu told journalists in Brussels.

"There's a danger that Somalia will become a theatre for clashes between religions and civilisations," Tardiu continued. Extremism doesn't have deep-seated roots in Somali society, he claimed, adding: "The phenomenon of the Islamist Union of Islamic Courts (UIC) movement is a response to a failed state - this represents a threat."

Given this context, only the withdrawal of Ethiopian troops as soon as possible, and the deployment of an international peacekeeping force that will safeguard a ceasefire can bring security to the war-wracked country, Tardiu argued. The Ethiopian government has undertaken to withdraw its troops from Somalia within two weeks.

"Only a political solution can create any prospect of peace and stability in Somalia," Tardiu cautioned, adding that "a comprehensive dialogue is needed that includes all the forces in Somalia, including moderates from the UIC. His comments echoed those made on 3 January by EU politicians at meeting on Somalia in Brussels. They agreed on the need to include all the country's political forces in peace talks, and favouring an African peacekeeping force that would be acceptable to all parties.

Germany's foreign minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier, speaking on behalf of his country's presidency of the EU - which hosted the Brussels meeting last week - assured Somalis "unfaltering, especially humanitarian, assistance," from the bloc and also from the United Nations.

What do they have against us killing terrorists? Seems to me they would be grateful for lessening the odds of future attacks against THEM. What the hell is dialog going to do with a know terrorist organization? I just don't get it.

"There's a danger that Somalia will become a theatre for clashes between religions and civilisations," Tardiu continued. Extremism doesn't have deep-seated roots in Somali society, he claimed

Where on Earth has this fool been? The tense of his first statement is wrong. It was correct 5 years ago. His second statement is simply ridiculous. Of course extremism doesn't root itself in societies where it already exists!   Extremism doesn't have deep-seated roots in Somali society... That's why there is fighting to keep it out.

Talk about pure unadulterated doublespeak.

Same attitude these idiots take towards Darfur.

What a useless organization. They should merge with the UN and become twice as useless.

EU you have zero influence over the US. You guys stand by and let genocide occur and have never ending talks at the UN that accomplishes nothing. You are not our moral superior and you are a weak power. So STFU because russia is about to make you its B*tch with petrol, and you will need the US on your side.

It isn't the EU. It is the Communist wing of the Eu which fronts itself as a Human Rights group.

I reckon the rapid Islamification of Europe is indicative of "failed states" too. Perhaps in that regard, this guy knows whatof he speaks.

"comprehensive dialogue is needed"

"Comprehensive" as in a two week conference in a lush resort location with 5 star meals, first class round-trip airfares and round-the-clock on call limousine transportation.

Upper strata socialists (ala the global warming lie industry), know how to reap the full benefits of bountiful capitalism, just call for a meeting on the taxpayer's nickel.

Isn't there a cable that needs cutting which runs across the Atlantic?

We don't need to listen to the constant whining from the EU as it sinks into a turd world Islamic oblivion.

After 1400 years, Mohammadans have suceeded in conquering Europe, and all it took were pregnant Jihadi women on welfare and disgruntled youts burning lemons. Enjoy the 7th century, Europe. Better rush out and buy that donkey and cart they will be in short supply until the auto plants convert to donkey cart manufacuring.
