Democrats Declare Martial Law Here's one major difference between the 1994 election and the one in 2006 and the aftermath from each. In 1994, Republicans told voters, before and after the election, precisely what they would do. Speaker Newt Gingrich did not promise fealty with Democrats nor did he promise to practice a political Golden Rule. Voters disgusted with Democrats had given Republicans a mandate, and they would ram through their "Contract with America." - Cal Thomas, Promises, promises, Thursday, January 4, 2007
Cal Thomas summation of the Republican rise to power in the House back in 1994 is an accurate one we were honest in our intention, uncompromising in our agenda and true to our principles. We felt no need to Trojan Horse our plans from the American people or our Democrat opponents. Indeed, unlike the Ancient Greeks, we planned to storm the city head-on, armed with the strength of our ideas.
Nancy Pelosi and the Democrats however, had a different approach. As was referenced by one of our earlier posts in a quote from Pelosi herself,
Democrats pledge to conduct our work with civility and bipartisanship, and to act in partnership - not partisanship - with the president and Republicans in Congress.
But lets leave this point for later.
Once we assumed power we made every effort to follow House procedure and allow for open debate. My critics reading this may think differently, and even use the Medicare vote as an example, so lets go ahead and compare. With the Medicare vote being open for 3 hours, members had every opportunity to cast a vote and allow for proper representation of their constituents and their ideological interests. No one, Republican or Democrat, was denied the opportunity to debate or properly represent their constituents. If their biggest gripe is that we left the vote open for too long so we could further deliberate and negotiate, then we were doing our job. The U.S. House of Representatives is a representative body, and every caution, even if its ceding punctuality, must be taken to ensure that it stays that way.
Nancy Pelosi and her fellow Democrats, however, are busy betraying this fundamental truth during their First 100 hours by using House Rules in order to disallow Republicans from entering the debate or offering any amendments on the pile of liberal bills they are attempting to railroad through. Consider this the Democrats are passing rules on bills that have not even been introduced or gone through committee yet! In effect, Pelosi and the Democrats have declared martial law in the House and their First 100 Hours is nothing more then a Democrat blitzkrieg during which no debate, or suggested alteration, will be allowed lest it slow down their unscrupulous assault on parliamentary procedure.
This from the same people who talked about civility, bipartisanship, a Minority Bill of Rights and open and honest debate being the hallmarks of their tenure in power a true Trojan Horse if ever there was one.
Unquestionably, this is one of the worst abuses of power I have ever witnessed greater even than 1988 when Speaker Wright tried rolling two legislative days into one. At least that wasnt 100 hours long.
I have never been one to object to principled partisanship in fact, I think there is no better way to govern. But I have always objected to masquerading politicians cloaking themselves in the guise of compromise and cooperation while their true intentions could not be further from the façade they project. Certainly over the course of my experience, I have come to expect nothing less from Pelosi and her cohorts, but the American people have a right to expect something more. The House of Representatives as an institution means more than the newly elected leaderships first 100 hours, and now is the time for House Republicans to fight for it.
Every Republican Rep should have a list of amendments in hand and rise 1 after another to ask the Speaker to be allowed to read a bill, or to offer an amendment, to ask for a quorum, etc. Every chance they get. They should be politely unruly and continue every single day.
I hope all the people that thought the way to convince others that may have been considering not voting or going third party was by calling them mororns, idiots, etc. or telling them their votes weren't needed anyway are happy now.
This is not surprising. It goes back to the old saying ... "If you are wondering what the Liberals (Dems) are up to, just listen to what they are accusing others (Pubbies) of doing". Once again, this fits perfect.
No matter what the SF Whore does, she aint ever gonna get diddly since all matters pass through the Senate on the way to the POTUS.
Yes, those democrates are breaking promises right out of the box....
Sorry, couldn't resist! :)
I don't think the Republicans in the house have the leadership or the balls to do that. Too bad DeLay isn't there.
I don't know what to believe; one day I'm told by GOP faithfulhow stupid I am and that my vote doesn't mean anything so go ahead and vote my conscience then the next day the GOP faithful tell me how stupid I am for voting my conscience!
I guess the only thing that is consistent is that the GOP faithful think I'm stupid.
That sure makes me want to join forces with them /s!
A disciple of Aristotle Onasis, maybe?
That's rich coming from DeLay...the moron who cost us at least one House seat in a solid GOP district.
What exactly was it that Tom Delay did to "cost us" his seat?
Just how is DeLay the moron when he is being charged with something that wasn't even a crime! Charges have been brought up and a trial delayed so they could force him out of the House. And they have and they wanted him gone because he was one of the very few Republicans who would fight back against those dirty rat ba***rds. He will be sorely missed in the House.
Yea well I hope the idiots, morons and people whose vote didn't count are happy now that they didn't vote or voted third party. They are the ones who put Pelosi in.
he he heeee
DeLay didn't cost us a damn thing. Some bought and paid for "prosecutor" brought charges against him after he shopped around for a compliant grand jury then refused to let DeLay have his day in court. Rouge prosecutors on the payroll of political hacks or out to make a name for themselves by bringing "charges" (see Duke rape case) are a new threat to the country. Not Tom DeLay.
One real danger of having millions of unassimilated immigrants from undemocratic countries here is that they do not understand or believe in democracy. You can pick that up many places, especially in the cynicism of democracy for Iraq. It is also writ large on the Democrat methods of seizing and weilding power. They are totalitarian elitists, not democrats. They are progressive only in the sense that their mentality is 1900.
But this would mean the repubs would have to get a backbone, and we all know that will never happen. These easychair, cigar smoking, milk toast eating crop of spineless weasels mearly want their pay, and the hell with their constituents. This is why they are out of power. And just who the hell is martinez, and why is he leading the GOP?
"Either grow a pair or vacate your chair."
Martinez is a moderate from Florida.
We need a conservative agenda driven leader up there. We needed Michael Steele to lead the GOP.
I wish the 'Pubbies had been as nasty and ruthless as the Democrats are going to be - they'd still be in office, and they might have done something both useful and relatively permanent with their tenure as majority.
