NYT: THREATENED BY THE INTERNET, TIME MAGAZINE SLIMS DOWN Sun Jan 07 2007 19:12:16 ET

TIME magazine, which has been coming out every Monday for over 36 years, hit the streets last Friday instead.

"I believe that getting the magazine on newsstands on Friday helps us set the news agenda," explained Richard Stengel, the managing editor.

NEW YORK TIMES media columnist David Carr takes the opportunity to rain on TIME's first weekend parade:

"At the end of the month, there will be significant layoffs at the magazine division... In the last six months, the huge rate base of Time magazine has been cut by almost 20 percent, the street date has been moved, and at the end of the month, the standard editorial model -- a centralized, well-paid cadre processing every bit of copy that comes in the door -- will be kaput..."

Carr explains: 'A tremendous amount of effort has been expended on TIME's new Web site, which makes its debut Monday."

Carr knocks the print magazine: "In its current state, a thin weekly on increasingly thin paper, TIME magazine is not much of a thing to behold."

If they printed it in a comic book format they might do better. At the least, their circulation would increase.

Does it come on a roll in four packs yet?

Ha ha. They actually carried this on the network "news".

A bigger non-story I have never seen. One dinosaur media sympathizing with another, I guess.

I slimmed down my magazine subscriptions a few years back. . . dropped both Time and Newswe(a)k. . .for the same and obvious reasons that have prompted many others to do the same.

Sorry Time; but you reporting is worth the paper you now must use to print on. . .

. . .and even without your 'past'. . .your 'person of the year'; surely must have given a few; final resolution to their decision as to whether to buy - or not. . .

If they actually hired conservative reporters, then they might not have to lay off staff.

"I believe that getting the magazine on newsstands on Friday helps us set the news agenda,"

And therein lies the problem.

The NY Times is running with this...hmmmmm

Probably hoping to skim some of the Times' investors because their own stock is at a sell status.

IN the vast configuration of things they are not much more then scurvy little spiders.

I still remember when Time was a slightly more conservative weekly compared to Newsweek.

Now it's just a weird seditious little pamphlet....

The New York Times is eager to run this story about the contraction of Time Magazine to get the latest story about the shrinking business of NYT out of the headlines. It was announced last Friday on the Dow Jones Newswires. Under increased pressure by investors to focus on saving the faltering newspaper, the story is "NY Times Sells Nine Local TV Stations for $575 Million".
