Not "most of upstate New York", "part of upstate New York". But alas, they fought for the United Kingdom in the Revolution so they LOST their best stuff. Their reserves are mostly in Canada these days and are protected by the same Treaty of Paris that granted the American colonies their independence and capacity as independent states.

Now the Oneida fought for the United States of America and were promised all sorts of stuff by George Washington, Congress and others.

Eventually the state of New York managed to steal their land and kick them out.

A few years ago the Oneida won a battle in the Supreme Court to have their rights restored. New York was then given the opportunity to provide land to the Oneida in the requisite quantity.

This is currently under way.

At the same time the Oneida were given the opportunity to open a casino so they could raise the money from among the now native New Yorkers to purchase all that land for the Oneida orphans and widows.

You were, of course, thinking of the entire Iriquoian Confederation when you said "Mohawk".

Thanks. I believe Ray Halbritter is the current Chief of the Oneida. Smart man.
