New Zealand “Plan B” Manufacturer Admits That “Plan B” Is Abortive

Schering [NZ] Ltd, the manufacturer of Plan B medication in New Zealand, has admitted that it can cause abortion in the earliest stages of pregnancy.

A pamphlet produced by Schering that pharmacists give to women who purchase the drug, clearly states that Plan B may prevent a fertilized egg from attaching to the womb, thereby causing the death of the newly-conceived child. According to LifeSite News, the pamphlet states that the drug works by stopping or delaying the ovaries from releasing an egg, preventing sperm from fertilizing an egg the woman may have already released, and/or stopping a fertilized egg from attaching itself to the lining of the uterus.

Plan B is available in New Zealand without prescription for over-the-counter sales in pharmacies, with no age restrictions in place. However, Schering does not place a warning about the abortive properties of Plan B on its packaging.

Here in the United States, Plan B was made available for over-the-counter sale when the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) decided in August that women will not have to go to a doctor first, as long as they can prove to a pharmacist that they are 18 or older. The move reversed a decision made three-years earlier by the FDA, which prohibited such sale of Plan B.

At the time of the decision, clearly a controversial one, Senator Tom Coburn of Oklahoma said that it had “nothing to do with science or FDA rules, but …everything to do with politics.”

The decision became effective on December 6, 2006.
