Looking for Mr. Right(Dick Cheney maybe...)
Time ^ | Jan. 4, 2007 | KAREN TUMULTY

It wasn't so long ago that conservatives believed that George Bush's presidency would usher in a political realignment that would last for decades. But as the right looks forward to the next election, something close to panic is setting in. Surveying the leading G.O.P. contenders for 2008, direct-mail guru Richard Viguerie pronounces "not a one of them is worthy of support from conservatives." Says Craig Shirley, a public relations executive who represents many conservative groups and who has written a book on the Reagan revolution: "There's anger, there's angst, there's dismay in the conservative movement." Some activists, Shirley adds, have even begun talking quietly among themselves about forming a third party.

All that worry might seem premature, given that the Iowa caucuses are still a year away. But the race for the Republican nomination is already taking a shape that alarms many conservatives, especially the Evangelicals who were so crucial to Bush's re-election in 2004. None of the top three potential Republican candidates considering a bid to succeed Bush has a record that makes the right entirely comfortable. Senator John McCain originally opposed Bush's tax cuts, supports looser immigration policies, voted against a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage and was an architect of the deal under which Senate Democrats retained their right to filibuster Bush's judicial nominees. Former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani is in favor of gun control, abortion rights and same-sex civil unions. And outgoing Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney espoused liberal views on gay rights and abortion when he was running for office in Massachusetts, though he has disavowed them as he has moved into national politics. Many conservatives had high hopes for Virginia's George Allen and Pennsylvania's Rick Santorum--until they lost their Senate re-election races last year.

The whole thing revolves around timing and momentum. The war distorted the entire political scenario this time, along with the bad assed lobbyist and the Dems really capitalized on these and other factors. Two years from now is a lifetime in politics!!!

Cheney is one of my favorites, but once a politician is subjected to ridicule... put a fork in 'em cause they're done! The hunting accident took Dick out forever and even Tom Delay would have a better chance of recovery than Cheney.

Duncan Hunter is now my second choice, but between now and the Primary in '08, he may stub his toe and his fellow Repubs sieze on it! As the old song says... "I don't like it but I guess things happen that way!

I don't totally disagree with parts of some of your statements, but I do disagree with the grandiose and sweeping generalizations in the form of proclamations you are putting out on this thread.

I mentioned Tiger Woods' mother because whenever is mentioned "race wise"...it's he's an African American...never mentioned as an Asian American which is I believe is his mother's ethnicity...that was my point...
gezzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Now back to our regularly scheduled debate "Who will be the best GOP presidential candidate in 2008?"

Does living in the real world mean that only McCain can beat Hillary?

No, but it can't be a hardline social Conservative.

Brownback and Huckabee are both owned by the pro-slave labor lobby and have demonstrated that American citizenship is something to be given away cheaply to those who disrespect our borders, refuse to learn our language and, in many cases, suckle the teats of our overburdened taxpayers.

Duncan Hunter has a compelling biography and a respectable record. The best that can be said about Mitt Romney is that he might be a watered-down Duncan Hunter. Hunter could actually win if he gets the financing and exposure. From what I've seen, his speaking skills are at least equal to Mitt.

You really haven't been following what I've been saying, have you? You're living under the delusion that a hardline Conservative could win. I say the facts say the opposite. See post #108. We are a different country than we were even 10 years ago. We are no longer a conservative majority. We are moderate. And we must proceed as such.

Mike Huckabee left Arkansas with no Republicans holding state wide offices. Quite a legacy.

sorry you wasted so much time listing congressional & senate races which have no relevance to presidential races. LOL

"Now, why tell me why you think a Conservative can win?"

the GOP has WON the last 7 out of 10 presidential races.
now you can argue how "conservative" any of them were but they certainly weren't Libs!

still waiting for your candidate....waiting...and waiting...

Right now, I support Rudy Guiliani. My top issue is the WOT. I want a president tough on that. Without that, all others don't exist. I like Hunter, I voted for him since I lived in his district. If I believed he had any chance of winning, I would support him. But he doesn't. It's as simple as that. All the wishing, hoping, wanting won't change that fact.

"We are moderate. And we must proceed as such."

I thought you just said a few replies back up thread... "I give up." You should have, while you were at least even-steven!!! Have a nice Sunday.

Looks to me that you are beginning to prefer socialist conservatives to social conservatives!!!

Santorum just lost here in PA, his home state. I doubt if he'll be running for president.

Bingo.

Sad but true. We lost several Republicans in this election who were previously considered likely Presidential candidates.

It doesn't really matter. To beat Hillary/Obama we're going to have to give moderates an alternative or at least a reason to get out and vote. A hardline conservative won't do it. Sorry.

There is always hope, elect conservatives we can still. What you fail to factor is that the Democrats are in control, that is something that curry's our favor. They will inevitably squander their power as they are consumed by hate and ruled by their emotions. If however I am under the victim of my own delusions and the best we can do are moderates, God help this country because I doubt it will help itself.

Then why in '06 did the Dems have their candidates campaign conservative, thus winning back Congress. Rush always says, "Conservatism wins every time it's tried."
