Looking for Mr. Right(Dick Cheney maybe...)
Time ^ | Jan. 4, 2007 | KAREN TUMULTY

It wasn't so long ago that conservatives believed that George Bush's presidency would usher in a political realignment that would last for decades. But as the right looks forward to the next election, something close to panic is setting in. Surveying the leading G.O.P. contenders for 2008, direct-mail guru Richard Viguerie pronounces "not a one of them is worthy of support from conservatives." Says Craig Shirley, a public relations executive who represents many conservative groups and who has written a book on the Reagan revolution: "There's anger, there's angst, there's dismay in the conservative movement." Some activists, Shirley adds, have even begun talking quietly among themselves about forming a third party.

All that worry might seem premature, given that the Iowa caucuses are still a year away. But the race for the Republican nomination is already taking a shape that alarms many conservatives, especially the Evangelicals who were so crucial to Bush's re-election in 2004. None of the top three potential Republican candidates considering a bid to succeed Bush has a record that makes the right entirely comfortable. Senator John McCain originally opposed Bush's tax cuts, supports looser immigration policies, voted against a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage and was an architect of the deal under which Senate Democrats retained their right to filibuster Bush's judicial nominees. Former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani is in favor of gun control, abortion rights and same-sex civil unions. And outgoing Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney espoused liberal views on gay rights and abortion when he was running for office in Massachusetts, though he has disavowed them as he has moved into national politics. Many conservatives had high hopes for Virginia's George Allen and Pennsylvania's Rick Santorum--until they lost their Senate re-election races last year.

roses, I tend to agree. How many Republicans have been on national rv these past years, with the exception of mcshame, almost every day, trent lott, the spiffy dresser from UT. We have heard from Kyl and McConell from time to time, but mostly we hear only the decocRat's side of things.

I think one reason the msm has become so strong, is beause the silent majority (us) have allowed it. We watched the 60s group gain a strong and loud voice, and did nothing about it. Now a small but growing voice is becoming more vocal, we're still too quiet and not large enough for the masses to take seriously. We need to keep on keeping on.

What is meant by,/ the evangelicals played a major roll in Bush
candidacy?
I have read here on FR on numerous occasions the evangelicals
are a small minority and, couldn't swing an election!

Hey! The pendelum swings back and forth!! That's the reality you must face as a muddled moderate!!!

FR is just fine and completely relevant in that it's where the counterinsurgency against Liberalism/Moderatism/RINOism will start the magnificent comeback of Reagan conservatism. You'll find out, soon enough cause you'll be on the sidelines as an onlooker!!!

Huckabee has charm, and remember that at this time in 1975 Jimmy Carter was totally unknown. And money is far more plentiful than it used to be.

I absolutely love Tommy Franks...have heard him many times chatting with Sean Hannity and this General is a real man! Wish he had run in FL for the Senate Seat but since he didn't, can't imagine him running for President...that would be a huge get!

SANTORUM 2008

OK, if we can't have Cheney, Rick is a great choice. Super conservative, great ideas and speaking abilities, nice family, strong in faith, Italian-immigrant story, and very handsome (remember the HDTV factor another FReeper pointed out will not be kind to a certain someone)...

But how do we get him to run and help him with the much-needed millions???

The time is now to weed out the progressive candidates like Guiliani and replace them with conservatives like Hunter, not the presidential race but in the time beforehand, is that not what we should be doing?

Santorum just lost here in PA, his home state. I doubt if he'll be running for president.

Tiger is a full blown American! He has more mixture of Europe, Asia, Native American and Africa in him than most of us have and he looks it. I like him and he's a terrific golfer.
