Pelosi hints at denying Bush Iraq funds
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said newly empowered Democrats will not give President Bush a blank check to wage war in Iraq, hinting they could deny funding if he seeks additional troops.
"If the president chooses to escalate the war, in his budget request, we want to see a distinction between what is there to support the troops who are there now," she said in an interview broadcast Sunday.
"The American people and the Congress support those troops. We will not abandon them. But if the president wants to add to this mission, he is going to have to justify it and this is new for him because up until now the Republican Congress has given him a blank check with no oversight, no standards, no conditions," said Pelosi, D-Calif.
Her comments on CBS' "Face the Nation" came as Bush worked to finish his new war plan that could send as many as 20,000 additional U.S. troops to Iraq and provide more money for jobs and reconstruction programs.
Bush is expected to announce his plan as early as Wednesday.
When asked about the possibility of cutting off funds, House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer declined to say whether Democrats might do so, saying only that the current strategy clearly is "not working."
"I don't want to anticipate that," said Hoyer, D-Md., on "Fox News Sunday."
Some military officials, familiar with the discussions, say Bush at first could send 8,000 to 10,000 new troops to Baghdad, and possibly Anbar Province, and leave himself the option of adding more later if security does not improve.
"Based on the advice of current and former military leaders, we believe this tactic would be a serious mistake," Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev.,

No, we CAN'T question democrats patriotism now can we?
"President Bush will call your bluff."
Yup. All the President has to say is that he is not bringing home the troops and ask if Pelosi is going to leave the troops defenseless ?
She also doesn't have the votes.
Wanna bet, they did it before they are likely to do it again.
Between most of the Dems, who will adhere to party discipline, and the numerous RINOs, they'll be plenty of votes.
It's actually fairly easy, they craft the bills, they determine which bills get brought forward. There will be no bills providing money the Dem leadership doesn't want provided.
I hope all the "cut-and-run" no-vote Republicans on this site know that the blood is on their smug little hands....
I have nothing but contempt for them.
Obviously you've missed Sean Hannity's man-on-the-street segments. Americans barely know who the Vice-President is, much less Speaker of the House, or what it even means to be Speaker of the House. BTW, the dumbest usually say they are a Democrat.
There were over 10 times as many who lost their lives in the Southeast Asian war games. That became a reason to cut and run, just as it has now. They'll do it if they have the votes. They only need a majority, a President can't veto bills that are not passed.
I would just observe that we failed to defeat the leftists last November. We have at most one more chance in 2008.
Exactaly and it will the death of us all if the people in this country don't wake up.
The scarey part is they are right.
They need to sober up NOW.
I'm sick of the games and the bullsh!t.
Considering that would be about half of what we have nominally on flying status. Some of those are in depot overhaul, others tied down by shorter term inspections and maintenance of various sorts. Some number are in use for crew training. I doubt we could put 35 BUFFs in the air all at once. Of course we could mix in a few Bones and maybe manage 35 heavy bombers on target, but remember we mothballed a 1/3 or so of those to maintain funds to keep the rest flying.
Not only that, but nearly word for word from the "briefing" given by the real "Blood and Guts" himself.
You want to hear a little behind the scenes movie stuff? My Dad was very good friends with the guy who wrote the screenplay. When it was being made, he was so sure it was going to be an over-the-top, out and out flop, he demanded they take his name off the credits!!! Talk about a career mistake!!! LOL!
The
democrats did that in Vietnam at the cost of many more military deaths and forced us to leave hundreds of millions of dollars of equipment behind.
Look forward to seeing that again.
All the Democrats want is power and they will do anything to keep it. By mobilizing the ANTI WAR BASE, the HISPANIC AND BLACK BASE they have a MAJORITY OF THE VOTE. This country is headed for a rough ride -- fasten your seatbelts.
