Quite a makeover for newly sworn House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, as her national image morphed from leader of the San Francisco liberal elite to Italian Catholic mom from Baltimore.
There was her photo-op return to the Little Italy neighborhood where she grew up as Nancy D'Alesandro, the mayor's daughter. There was the visit to St. Leo the Great Catholic Church, where they still recite Mass in Italian several times a year.
"It's clear Republicans are reeling today based on her outreach to Italian Catholics who, as we know, have deserted the Democratic Party in the Midwest in droves,'' said San Francisco power attorney Joe Cotchett, who was among those attending the Pelosi swearing in.
While the marathon events in the nation's capital might have resembled a coronation, those most familiar with how Washington works said Pelosi's time in the spotlight amounted to well-calculated politics that could help her move her agenda in her first 100 days.
"A lot of people don't know much about her, so this is a chance to fill in her profile and biography so she doesn't just become the San Francisco liberal,'' said San Francisco consultant Chris Lehane, a veteran of the Clinton-Gore White House. "This is the one time when the press will be focusing on it.''
And it may be working.
According to the results of a Rasmussen Reports national phone survey of 800 likely voters, released Friday, Pelosi's approval rating has jumped to 43 percent -- up 19 points from November.
On the other hand, the same poll also found 39 percent of those surveyed still give Pelosi the thumbs-down.

Disagree, look at how many "Catholics" on this site support Rudy Rockefeller.
"pelosi's new image as an italian-catholic mom."
maybe she can re-name washington. how about... rome? maybe she can declare wednesday to be spaghetti day.
(italian-catholic-american, irish-catholic-american, polish-catholic-american,
jewish-american, native-american.....how many are there?....who the hell knows. they take "pride" in their diversity and do nothing but divide the nation. the worst part is that they don't care. they think they're cool.)
a suggestion; why don't you all go back to where you love? because it sure ain't here.
There are more than a few Catholics wanting Rome to call on these politicians to stand up for life or be excommunictaed.
John Kerry and his wife are supposed Catholics. Like the others, have a particular brand of Catholicism. One that picks out the parts they like and discard the teachings they do not like. I think you can trace the downhill slide
of America to abortion. Lack of respect for life by the young is a sure sign America will falter even more in the coming years. Where else in the world could we watch a husband living with another woman starve his brain injured wife to death? We all watched as the family that loved this
woman was denied custody by a man that was determined to kill the girl they loved. A most amazing situation of abuse and neglect done in the name of love.
A strange Catholic who would realign the sacraments to put Abortion and Buggery on top.
Apart from the fact that Catholics are supposed to believe in that square God thing, and if she thinks really hard she can remember something about a dead-guy-on-a-stick.

sorry about the double postings. I have a new cordless mouse and it takes some getting used to. Hair trigger.
Do you have a problem with Italian heritage?
Spoken like someone who a) IS a San Francisco liberal and b) engineered the character assassination of Katherine Harris.
Florida's secretary of state, Katherine Harris, had declared she would enforce a Nov. 14 deadline for certifying results from the counties. The legal battle was fully joined, and it was ugly. Mr. Gore's campaign press secretary, Chris Lehane, had publicly called Ms. Harris "a hack" and "Commissar Harris," drawing critical editorials and a rebuke from the vice president...
Yeah, and slick Willie toted a Bible into church. Clinton's use of the Bible was the same as the W.C. Field's quote: he was looking for loopholes.
Religion is all the rage these days. Except for Islamonazis, who believe that rage is all the religion.
This brings to mind John Kerry's transformation from Vietnam war protestor to Vietnam war hero.
Giving birth to her own babies doesn't make her maternal...
...or she would be crying out for protection of the unborn....AND SHE'S NOT!
Instead, she's actively aiding and abetting those who kill in the womb.
She's a hypocrite of the highest order!
She may claim to be Catholic and I may claim to be a king. At best she is a heretic. As a Catholic who strugles every day to be devout and who embraces ALL of what Mother Church teaches, I am more than a little tired of her and her ilk. However, I have more pity than anything else for her and I will pray for the conversion of her heart.
As a LCMS member, I always go back to put pastor's comment in a non Church related gathering just before the 2004 elections.
I don't know how anyone can go to Church on Sunday, and vote for a democrat the following Tuesday.
Well said.I agree completely on the points you've made !!!
It might hurt her carefully crafted media image.I don't beleive she has any fear of God-her stance on abortion proved that.
In 2004, pro-life Catholics convinced a few Bishops to deny communion to sKerry. Naturally, left wing Catholics and the media deplored such "extreme partisanship".
I wonder what would happen if the same treament was applied to Rudy on the campaign trail. Would the media praise pro-life groups for being "non-partisan" in attacking a GOP candidate? And would left wing Catholics come out and decry Rudy's mayoral policies for torturing the poor?
