The inventor of instant noodles, Momofuku Ando, has died in Japan, aged 96, of a heart attack.
Mr Ando was born in Taiwan in 1910 and moved to Japan in 1933, founding Nissin Food Products Co after World War II to provide cheap food for the masses.
His most famous product, Cup Noodle, was released in 1971.
Its taste and ease of preparation - adding hot water to dried noodles in a waterproof polystyrene container - have made it popular around the world.
Mr Ando said the inspiration for his product came when he saw people lining up to buy bowls of hot ramen noodle soup at a black market stall during the food shortages after World War II.
Noodles in space
He developed his first instant noodles, Chicken Ramen, in 1958.
The product came out as Japan recovered from the ravages of World War II and began a long period of economic expansion.
It was the masterstroke of providing a waterproof polystyrene container for the noodles that made his Cup Noodle an instant success in 1971.
Nissin has led the global instant noodle industry since then, selling 85.7 billion servings every year, according to Agence France Presse.
His firm also developed a version of Cup Noodle for Japanese astronauts to eat on the space shuttle Discovery in 2005.
In 1999, Mr Ando opened a museum in Osaka devoted to instant noodles.
He retired as Nissin's chairman in 2005.
Japanese newspapers and business people have been paying tribute to Mr Ando.
"He was a self-made man who developed an epoch-making instant noodle product and spread it to all corners of the world," Akio Nomura, chairman of the Osaka Chamber of Commerce and Industry, told Kyodo news agency.
Mr Ando remained active until just days before his death, giving a New Year's speech to Nissin employees and having a lunch of Chicken Ramen with company executives.
Way back in my college days, during the height of my body-building days, I discovered the extra hot chili beans as a really good, low fat protein source.
When I lived in Boston, my friend (still in Florida) used to send me care packages of the stuff, because I couldn't buy them in Stalingrad West.
Larry, you've lived in the Dallas area -- you're probably familiar with the all time greatest chili powder of them all: Gebhardt's. I never make my jail house chili without it.
Yep, gratefulness works both ways....I'm sure he lived a very comfy life from those MILIIONS of students.
Times Square Bump!
Hmmmm. JC-rations.
< };^)
Cup o' Eucharist?
Just add holy water...
Single parents working through college can also thank him...
Loved the product. Rest in peace.
Ando-san provided quite a service to humanity, I'd say.
My cupboard's always well-stocked with several varieties of Top Ramen. In summertime, I might eat the cooked noodles cold or add them to salad.
Can't beat the broth on a cold day, especially if you have a cold or touch of flu. Top Ramen makes a great breakfast too.
I have sent hundreds of packages of ramen and Cup Noodles to our troops deployed in OIF and OEF, as one of the top requested items.
Imagine my surprise to find the guys were crunching on these raw when they went far forward on missions.
I was looking for someone to post this. My daughter (now 24) eats it exactly this way. I'd ask her "What do you have against hot water?" Her reply "It tastes better like this." Go figure...
That sounds perfectly awful. (I much prefer a fresh peanut butter and bacon sandwich...on toasted white bread with a coca-cola).
Rucksack Meal in a Cup BUMP!
Me too. We buy packages in bulk at Sam's Club.
A case of the stuff should be in every house's emergency supplies.
Chinese Cole Slaw
16 oz. Package cole slaw mix (shredded cabbage and carrots)
1 bunch green onions
1 package Beef Ramen Oodles of Noodles
½ c slivered almonds

Beef flavor packet from
Oodles of Noodles
1* Saute broken noodles and almonds in 2T
margarine until almost brown. Let cool.
2. Mix together salad dressing ingredients*
3. Pour dressing over cabbage mix and onions,
toss
4* Mix in noodles, almonds and sunflower seeds,

Note: Prepare all ingredients, wait until just before serving
to mix it all together (noodles will soften if they sit too long).
May add shredded cheese
This stuff is out and out junk. White flour with plenty of MSG and preservatives and polysyllabic additives. Enjoy!
Cheap eats. A freighter full of "enriched wheat flour" ramen noodles can save a starving country. Just keep the pork flavoring out of it to avoid the fatwa.
Amen brother...maybe a Sapporo beer for this guy.
19D Bump.
