UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) - Iran's U.N. ambassador denied on Friday reports circulating on the Internet that Tehran's supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, had died.

"We checked last night and there is no truth to it," Javad Zarif, Iran's chief envoy to the United Nations, told Reuters about the reports, which first appeared on Web sites on Thursday.

The Internet rumors were circulating among traders in energy and other financial markets, but had not moved prices.

Iran's U.N. ambassador denied on Friday reports circulating on the Internet that Tehran's supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, had died...

Was there any mention of a 'Near-death' experience? Would be interesting to hear if the Ayatollah saw/talked with Ayytollah Khomeini, or Chairman Yasser Arafat, or even the Prophet Mohammad; can't help but wonder if the "Lowest Pit of Hell" is as bad as I've always imagined...

Does it matter? Is there any indication that Khamenei would be succeeded by a more rational leader who could keep Ahmedinijad's leash firmly in hand?

It does matter. One of the "candidates" to succeed Khamenei seems to be pres.Ahmedinijad's spiritual leader. You know, the guy who trained him to be the one to usher in the Mahdi. It this fellow, I cannot remember his name, becomes supreme ayatholah we are in for a very warm spring indeed! BTW, isn't it a coincidence that all this is happening just when the Iranian official website was announcing the Mahdi's coming by the spring equinox? At the time I wondered what did they know that we didn't, now I think this business with Khamenei may just be what they knew!

The Internet rumors were circulating among traders in energy and other financial markets, but had not moved prices.

Several people, on FR and many other sites, have been posting rumors over the last few weeks about Khamenei's health -- all of them subsequently proven false. Call me paranoid, but I wonder if this isn't an attempt to influence financial markets by building internet buzz. Watch these people closely.
