Governor Timothy Kaine (D) wants to increase the sales tax on car to five percent, making it equal to the sales tax on most other goods. Overall, the Governor says his funding proposals would raise $800 million annually for transportation. Kaine also wants a $15 increase in the vehicle registration fee.
The proposals are very similar to what Kaine prosposed last year. The General Assembly did not pass a transportation plan during the 2006 session.
House Republicans are already shooting down the idea. Del. Leo Wardrup (R-Virginia Beach) says a two percent increase in the sales tax would be "a big wallup" for people.
I think they need some "encouragement" from the voters who will be footing the bill.
Time for my annual rant to Stosch.
Yep
Just to be clear, the car tax is an annual property tax (about 2% or so), Kaine wants to raise sales tax from 3 to 5.
Being in the transportation industry and fully aware of the high use taxes, license fees, Federal Excise Taxes, etc., all I gotta say is use the taxes you've got for it's intended purposes.
89% of the taxes collected are NOT allocated for infrastructure. That makes me mad.
--Yeah - I, ah, bought the car from a "friend" for cash for $1...--
I don't think that works anymore. Most regisration offices will go by the book value, not by your word.
I realize that - unfortunately our "R" controlled legislature tends to forget they are supposedly the party of lower taxes and less government.
Well said. Here in WI there are dozens of exemptions for our sales tax, and a state Dem Senator wanted to eliminate these exemptions & lower the property tax, but Gov Doyle shot it down.
Every item should be taxed at the same sales tax rate, with the possible exeception of prescription drugs. I'm all in favor of paying a single rate sales tax and abolish all the other state taxes.
Could it be because of the Car Tax? Get rid of the car tax and I'll gladly pay 5% on a new car purchase.
In VA, we already pay an annual tax for our vehicles. Revoke the car tax, and we can talk about sales tax.
That happens all the time in Ohio too.
Prescription and OTC drugs are about the ONLY thing not hit with a sales tax in VA.
I have a serious problem with sales taxes in general, and particularly those on food........whethr in the grocery store, or in a restaurant.
way to go virginia... you get what you voted for!
I agree with you on the car tax. This would have a lot broader appeal if it wre a replacement for the car tax. Or at least I would think so.
Just before he died FL Gov. Chiles (D) said FL cound NEVER meet its budget needs unless it repealed the prohibition in the constitution against a state income tax.
He died, Jeb Bush won and we have had budget surpluses since.

The liberal mindset. Spending comes before fiscal restraint and budgeting. They are idiots that continue to survive because the taxed masses do not stop it.
It's clear to me. I pay both. On a 2005 Honda Pilot, I paid $578 on a car assessed at $26,000. The actual car tax bill was $1,188 minus the car tax relief of $609. It is more than 2%. And I paid the 3% sales tax when I purchased the car, which amounted to $991. Is it clear to you?
"You elect a Democrat you get tax hikes. It's that simple."
You got that right.
Change Change Change until we ALL chock on CHANGE.
Are you normally that ignorant, or do you just play it that way on FR?
