From Lucy To Reba: A Look at Cuban and Hollywood Relations
December 28, 2006

"To survive in Hollywood, you need the ambition of a Latin-American revolutionary." Billie Burke
Most everyone knows Desi Arnaz. That is to say, everyone knows he was the star and executive producer of "I Love Lucy." And anyone who has ever watched the show knows that he was Cuban and a talented musician. But something that not many people know is that Arnaz played a vital part in the set up of the show at a time when the television sitcom was still being molded. Arnaz conceptualized the multi-cam setup used for filming the set, a format that would be used on virtually every sitcom from "Happy Days" to "Full House" to "Friends." Now folks, let's pause, take a breath and consider this fact: A Cuban is responsible for how American sitcoms have been filmed for more than 50 years!

Good article. Not all "Hispanics" are the same and it is not fair to say "Hispanic" when what you really need to say is Chicano or Mexican. Many Americans seem to think that "Hispanics" are a new brown skinned race - wrong - The girl in Reba is not a rarity and in Latin America there are millions of folk like her - real blond hair, blue eyes, tall - That's why Congressman Tom Tancredo was so wrong about what he said about Miami - although one can be mixed blood and still be Hispanics - the original Hispanics are Caucasian and in Miami the place is filled with Cubans that can be mistaken for Irish, Germans, Brits, or whatever goes for "white" no a days. My ancestors came from Spain - a white European nation - they sailed to Cuba to settle there - they did not intermarry - yet I am considered non white by many ignorants though I look like one of the Sopranos!

". . . and in Miami the place is filled with Cubans that can be mistaken for Irish, Germans, Brits, or whatever goes for "white" nowadays."One has only to watch Sabado Gigante for more than ample evidence of this fact.

You are absolutely correct. Cuba had extensive Spanish and other European migration until right before the communist takeover. It is the liberals that have created this classification of "latino" or "hispanic" in an effort to create some type of new racial classification. The reality is that the various ethnic groups that the liberals try to lump together actually have very little in common. Even the style of Spanish that they speak is often quite different.
