President Bush is likely to send anywhere from 20,000 to 40,000 additional troops to Iraq as part of his yet-to-be-announced new Iraq strategy, sources with knowledge of his deliberations told CNN Wednesday.
Bush is expected to address the nation on the new strategy early next week, sources have said.
The president has not yet signed off on any changes, including a possible increase of U.S. troops, according to the sources. But he is "driving toward a conclusion" and a plan is "taking shape" and "getting more detailed" as the president puts "on the finer points," they said.

Is he going to radically change the rules of engagement? If not, it is an idiocy.
It's time we put a BIG footprint in the whole region. Pussyfootin' always gets the pussy killed.
Yes, new tactics and/or ROEs will have to go with.
This won't work without the destruction of the Militias.
The sources have knowledge, but no names, right?
I wonder if the "source" knew this:
The commandant of the Marine Corps, Gen. James T. Conway, told the Times that President Bush went to the Pentagon a few weeks ago and said flatly, "What I want to hear from you is how we're going to win, not how we're going to leave."
Nothing like an "element of surprise." /sarc/
Is there anything we may plan that doesn't get broadcast to our enemies and the world?
LOL --- you liked that, too!!!!!!
I think you may have missed the point of my post. IMHO we should have used overwhelming force from jump street. The PC crap that our government representatives seem to bow down to has resulted in the mess we now find ourselves in.
Do it and Do it RIGHT...to hell with the whiners that don't recognize this global conflict for what it is.
"Is he going to radically change the rules of engagement?"
That would be a good guess and a necessary step.
Iraq/WOT is Bush's legacy, and our last hope for a peaceful freedom. He can't afford to blow it.
Fortunately, he has ignored the ISG report, and that is now dead. Hopefully, he will continue to veer sharply away from the appeasement crowd, and open a case of whoop-ass on the bad guys.
It's our only chance. The world wants to side with a winner. Let's win, and shut our enemies down - especially those WITHIN our borders.
I sure hope so. Long past time the admin chucked the "compassionate" PC playbook out the window.
Increasing troop levels is not a strategy. What you do with the troops, that is a strategy. And I haven't heard one yet.
1. I don't trust CNN at all.
2. President Bush will not "throw" 40,000 more troops into the arena for the helluva it or for the benefit of his critics.
In the words of the immortal "Thing", "It's Clobbering Time". I say to hell with trying to be P.C., and let loose the dogs of war. These people have been killing each other for how many thousands of years? Well, if they desire to engage in death dealing, let's show them how it's done, with these death lovers as targets.
I hope the "surge" in troops is followed by an ultimatem to Syria that we will devastate them unless they do exactly what we want.
WMDs?? So you are suggesting that we needed to go in softly because we didn't know what they had or had not? Amazing.
I don't give a whit about whether or not WMDs were found (which they were). What I care about, and approve of, is that our military has created a bowl in the middle east into which the terrorists flow...and we are dispatching them in droves.
We need to get real as a nation or else get real used to having your ears and nose cut off because you married a girl from the wrong side of the tracks.
I know my choice.
