Since first being elected to Congress in 1980, Duncan Hunter has devoted himself to ensuring that our military is second to none, securing our nations borders, and protecting American workers from unfair competition. Hunter has worked on these issues not because they make headlines, but because they are the right things to do for our country.
A Vietnam veteran, Duncan Hunter has served in the 173rd Airborne and 75th Army Rangers and after returning home, utilized the G.I. Bill to attend Western State University Law School in San Diego. While completing his degree, Hunter worked in farming and construction, and opened a storefront legal office after graduation where he began serving many in the Hispanic community, often without compensation. In 1980, Hunter was asked to mount a challenge for the Congressional seat held by Lionel Van Deerlin. Despite the district having a 2-to-1 Democratic registration, Hunter won the seat in an upset.
Coming to Washington, Hunter successfully sought a seat on the House Armed Services Committee where he could work on Americas national security priorities. Serving on this committee throughout his career, Hunter became Chairman of the full committee in 2002, overseeing a $542 Billion Dollar defense budget. Hunter focuses his efforts on providing President Bush with the necessary resources to win our nations military conflicts, protecting our men and women in uniform, and developing modernization initiatives that will deliver new and more effective technologies to the battlefield.
Hunter also came to Congress to make securing the California-Mexico border a top priority. As a resident of a border community, Hunters goal was to make the region safe for communities on both sides of the border by providing border enforcement agencies with the tools they need to be effective. September 11, however, made border security a national security issue and Hunter responded by leading efforts in Congress to seal a porous border vulnerable to illegal aliens, drug trafficking and terrorism. Hunter successfully provided over 59 miles of fencing and border infrastructure to date in San Diego County, including continued construction of the Southwest Border Fence Project and fought to ensure that legislation extending the San Diego fence for 700 miles across Arizona, New Mexico and Texas became law.
Hunters other legislative priorities include retaining and increasing jobs across America, providing tax relief to hard-working American families, keeping our promises to American veterans, protecting Social Security for present and future generations, and promoting strong family values.
Hunter resides in El Cajon with his wife, Lynne. Like many of his constituents, he is in the process of re-building his Alpine home after it was lost in the October 2003 wildfires. In 2006, Duncan and Lynne celebrated their 33rd wedding anniversary and have two sons, Duncan Duane, honorably discharged from the Marine Corps and now president of Boise Hunter Homes, and Sam Hunter, a business student at San Diego State University. Duncan D, and his wife, Margaret, have three children, Duncan Lee, Elizabeth Grace and Sarah Louise, and reside in Boise, Idaho. Sam was married on Valentines Day 2004 to the former Theresa Heger of Jamul and their daughter Marin was born in October 2006.
And for a California Republican to vote against this error shows a good character and conscience.
Sorry. :)
I need to hear Hunter speaking/debating. He looks good on paper, but not being from CA, I don't really know him.
However, that's what a campaign is for.
I posted an over-the-top anti-McCain rant after the 2006 election, calling him the "Ultimate RINO". I don't care what his ACU ratings is -- he's a sneaky little b*st*rd and nobody with any sense trusts him. He's been the MSM dream 'Pub candidate for years -- 'nuff said.
So I won't be voting for McCain, then. Who? Well, the Ohio Primary is fifteen months away so I don't know, but if I had to vote this minute I think Rudy has the best chance to win in November 2008 and he's good on most issues -- though no conservative. The main problem I have with Rudy is I'm not sure he REALLY wants the job -- which was also the feeling I got about GHWB in 1992 (what a horrible campaign that was).
If a more conservative candidate were to develop before then who actually had a chance to win, I'd be on that bandwagon in a minute. Our best-known conservatives all have hugh and series problems though -- Gingrich is IMHO still damaged goods, Jeb is George's brother, and George Allen lost his Senate seat. Total unknowns, like Duncan Hunter, are good to develop for the future but are not realistic options for 2008.
Tancredo is a good choice if we want the exact same result we got this year in the Ohio Governor's race.
The good news is that the 'rats don't have a great candidate either. I'm not sure either Obama or Hillary will hold up under intense scrutiny.
That's not technically correct. Garfield was selected as the US Senator from Ohio before the GOP nominating convention began, and then he won the nomination as a dark horse candidate on the 36th ballot at that convention.
He was a senator when he took the office of President.
I like it.
He's done more in his life than Hillary, who has done absolutely nothing that wasn't a result of her husband's political positions.
LOL, I love "stump the know-it-all" questions. I usually have an opinion or at least a best guess, but sometimes I just don't know.
And admitting that up front is probably better than asserting the definitive wrong answer.
Don't worry. Many others will not hesitate to answer your question.
*****How many illegals are in his district? Sorry, sounds more like a RINO.*****
Hunter's concerns about illegal immigration are real and he's had that concern from the beginning - many years ago. In every legislative battle about the border, security and illegals he's been on he "right" side.
However as only one member of the congress he can't by himself secure the border. He can't personally stop the illegals - heck even the border patrol barely makes a dent.
But he got a fence going almost singlehandedly - getting a hold of those huge steel plates and getting them put up long before the national government got interested.
He's not a rhino - not at all.
There are illegals all over the country not just in this district.
I did not know that. You learn something new every day.
He was a senator when he took the office of President.
That's not technically correct, either. :) According to my research so far, he had been selected Senator by the Ohio legislature to replace Allen Granberry Thurman, whose term was ending, but Garfield never assumed that office or was sworn in. So technically, he was only senator-elect, and not senator.
"Personally, I think Hunter's got a shot."
So do I.
Beats me.
But how many EX mayors who've done squat for 5 years been elected President?
(I think it's between zero and none)
I think that's probably accurate. I wasn't sure whether he'd been sworn in as senator or not, and now I know.
Sometimes I feel like I'm 130 years old, but my recollection of the events of those days gets a bit fuzzy.
History is so cool. Not many people have an appreciation for it.
