Duncan Hunter's Bio [GOP presidential contender]
Peace Through Strength PAC ^

Posted on 01/03/2007 10:20:08 AM PST by Antoninus

Since first being elected to Congress in 1980, Duncan Hunter has devoted himself to ensuring that our military is second to none, securing our nation’s borders, and protecting American workers from unfair competition. Hunter has worked on these issues not because they make headlines, but because they are the right things to do for our country.

A Vietnam veteran, Duncan Hunter has served in the 173rd Airborne and 75th Army Rangers and after returning home, utilized the G.I. Bill to attend Western State University Law School in San Diego. While completing his degree, Hunter worked in farming and construction, and opened a storefront legal office after graduation where he began serving many in the Hispanic community, often without compensation. In 1980, Hunter was asked to mount a challenge for the Congressional seat held by Lionel Van Deerlin. Despite the district having a 2-to-1 Democratic registration, Hunter won the seat in an upset.

Coming to Washington, Hunter successfully sought a seat on the House Armed Services Committee where he could work on America’s national security priorities. Serving on this committee throughout his career, Hunter became Chairman of the full committee in 2002, overseeing a $542 Billion Dollar defense budget. Hunter focuses his efforts on providing President Bush with the necessary resources to win our nation’s military conflicts, protecting our men and women in uniform, and developing modernization initiatives that will deliver new and more effective technologies to the battlefield.

Hunter also came to Congress to make securing the California-Mexico border a top priority. As a resident of a border community, Hunter’s goal was to make the region safe for communities on both sides of the border by providing border enforcement agencies with the tools they need to be effective. September 11, however, made border security a national security issue and Hunter responded by leading efforts in Congress to seal a porous border vulnerable to illegal aliens, drug trafficking and terrorism. Hunter successfully provided over 59 miles of fencing and border infrastructure to date in San Diego County, including continued construction of the Southwest Border Fence Project and fought to ensure that legislation extending the San Diego fence for 700 miles across Arizona, New Mexico and Texas became law.

Hunter’s other legislative priorities include retaining and increasing jobs across America, providing tax relief to hard-working American families, keeping our promises to American veterans, protecting Social Security for present and future generations, and promoting strong family values.

Hunter resides in El Cajon with his wife, Lynne. Like many of his constituents, he is in the process of re-building his Alpine home after it was lost in the October 2003 wildfires. In 2006, Duncan and Lynne celebrated their 33rd wedding anniversary and have two sons, Duncan Duane, honorably discharged from the Marine Corps and now president of Boise Hunter Homes, and Sam Hunter, a business student at San Diego State University. Duncan D, and his wife, Margaret, have three children, Duncan Lee, Elizabeth Grace and Sarah Louise, and reside in Boise, Idaho. Sam was married on Valentine’s Day 2004 to the former Theresa Heger of Jamul and their daughter Marin was born in October 2006.

Every gun owner I know opposes Rudy

You just made my point for me. When Reagan beat Carter there was a famous NYTimes film critic who famously said

"I don't understand everyone I know voted democratic"

You need to step back from the echo chamber and look at 2 years of solid polling.....Rudy has the highest positives of any pol and will be hard to beat.

As I said before--that's because people don't know where he stands on the issues. They just have an image in their minds of him on 9/11. Do you honestly think his poll numbers will stay "high" once the base finds out he's a militant pro-abort, anti-2nd Amendment, pro-homosexual agenda, anti-border control, big government liberal?

He's being set up for a huge "Foley" by the MSM. Woe to us if we're short-sighted enough to nominate him.

Who does not know about Rudy's peccadilloes? Can you be hurt with things that are common knowledge? What is still secret about his private life.

As for his policies...

I will work for Duncan Hunter to win the nomination because I believe in his candidacy.

But if Rudy wins the nomination, I will vote for him. Because he will fight the war on terror and I just like him. I can't help it. There is something about him I just like.

On FR I've been hearing that for over a year now. He's still on top I'm skeptical of the argument.

I'm not talking about his personal life, although I'll bet there are still some skeletons rattling around that the MSM will bring out at an opportune moment if (God forbid) he does get the nomination.

The Foley scandal was damaging because it revealed that, despite its reputation as the "family values" party, the GOP has some pretty unsavory characters in it--and worse, has some enablers of unsavory characters in the upper echelons. Character still counts to the base and for many, the abortion and homosexual issues are iron-clad litmus tests. Rudy is not only bad on these issues, he's staggeringly bad--as bad as the worst Democrat.

If Giuliani got the nomination, he'd be prime meat for a 3rd Party challenge. And as I've said many times before, he'll get one. The Democrats will make sure of it.

Be skeptical all you want. When the NRA, Right to Life, and Pro-Family groups start sending out their voter guides showing that they favor neither candidate in the general election (or worse, that they favor a 3rd Party contender), you'll understand what I'm talking about.

But by then, it'll be too late. Way too late.

Unlike some, I respect the stand you have taken on this thread.

But I see a big difference between President H.R. Clinton and President Guiliani. I do not seem them as different sides of the same coin. And because I do not see them that way, I would gladly vote for Guiliani.

That being said, I will work for Hunter to be nominated.

But if push comes to shove and Guiliani gets the nomination...then he has my vote.

We agree on the second point. As for the first point, I respect your position, but can't share it. A radical pro-abort as the Republican standard-bearer is totally anathema to me. I'd give up on politics completely before I'd vote for such an individual.

Again... while I respect it, I do not understand it.

I hate abortion and see it as a sin that this nation will answer for. But we have had anti-abortion presidents in office and still abortion continues...

Rudy understands the war on terror. He understands what is at stake. On 9/11, he proved the quality of his leadership. To me, this issue is very, very important, and I cannot abandon it to Hiliary Clinton or John Kerry or John Edwards. I cannot!

That is why he will get my vote if he wins the nomination. But in the primary, it belongs to Hunter.

Here is a poll of conservative Iowa cauces voters who darn well know what Rudy's positions are.

http://www.hedgehogreport.com/index.php/6185

Also Michael Barone and Frank Luntz have both called Rudy the current favorite.

It may not be Rudy..it may be Romney or McCaine but as far as complete unknown like Hunter to be the next POTUS?

It's "Way too late".

Pro-abortion presidential candidates don't really make much difference unless they appoint pro-abortion Supreme Court judges.

Until the Supreme Court returns the issue to the states to resolve, it doesn't matter what any legislator or President thinks about it. The very most they can do is nibble at the edges.

We have had pro-life Presidents in office since Roe v. Wade and they've been unable to do anything about abortion. And Bill Clinton, who is pro-abortion, didn't do anything to make it worse.

I'm not sure it matters what someone's opinion is if they are powerless to implement it.

Well, I and many others will work to change that! People like you will sit by and nominate those you don't think are the best. I know Hunter is an effective speaker and I'd rather the GOP wake up from this spineless imitation of Demonrats and refusal to stand up for beliefs. I want a great candidate and the man who would be the man for these war ravaged times is Duncan Hunter.

It's up to REPUBLICANS to choose their nominee and doesn't that tell you something that the media is salivating at the thought of those 'names' as nominee! They are too pretty and will run a weak campaign against Hillary and the problem with the GOP is they have very few people to get the message across and are too spineless and let the media and Demonrats get away with a lot of their tripe. Hunter does not do that! The GOP will kill itself this next election because with the nominees you mention the party is going to splinter and not win the liberal 'moderate' states while it loses the states it needs to keep.

Hunter just needs to be at the debate, appearances, to get the message out there. The man is made to be President. And especially in these times. He will put the others to shame; that is, if you are looking for substance!
