Duncan Hunter's Bio [GOP presidential contender]
Peace Through Strength PAC ^
Posted on 01/03/2007 10:20:08 AM PST by Antoninus

Since first being elected to Congress in 1980, Duncan Hunter has devoted himself to ensuring that our military is second to none, securing our nations borders, and protecting American workers from unfair competition. Hunter has worked on these issues not because they make headlines, but because they are the right things to do for our country.
A Vietnam veteran, Duncan Hunter has served in the 173rd Airborne and 75th Army Rangers and after returning home, utilized the G.I. Bill to attend Western State University Law School in San Diego. While completing his degree, Hunter worked in farming and construction, and opened a storefront legal office after graduation where he began serving many in the Hispanic community, often without compensation. In 1980, Hunter was asked to mount a challenge for the Congressional seat held by Lionel Van Deerlin. Despite the district having a 2-to-1 Democratic registration, Hunter won the seat in an upset.
Coming to Washington, Hunter successfully sought a seat on the House Armed Services Committee where he could work on Americas national security priorities. Serving on this committee throughout his career, Hunter became Chairman of the full committee in 2002, overseeing a $542 Billion Dollar defense budget. Hunter focuses his efforts on providing President Bush with the necessary resources to win our nations military conflicts, protecting our men and women in uniform, and developing modernization initiatives that will deliver new and more effective technologies to the battlefield.
Hunter also came to Congress to make securing the California-Mexico border a top priority. As a resident of a border community, Hunters goal was to make the region safe for communities on both sides of the border by providing border enforcement agencies with the tools they need to be effective. September 11, however, made border security a national security issue and Hunter responded by leading efforts in Congress to seal a porous border vulnerable to illegal aliens, drug trafficking and terrorism. Hunter successfully provided over 59 miles of fencing and border infrastructure to date in San Diego County, including continued construction of the Southwest Border Fence Project and fought to ensure that legislation extending the San Diego fence for 700 miles across Arizona, New Mexico and Texas became law.
Hunters other legislative priorities include retaining and increasing jobs across America, providing tax relief to hard-working American families, keeping our promises to American veterans, protecting Social Security for present and future generations, and promoting strong family values.
Hunter resides in El Cajon with his wife, Lynne. Like many of his constituents, he is in the process of re-building his Alpine home after it was lost in the October 2003 wildfires. In 2006, Duncan and Lynne celebrated their 33rd wedding anniversary and have two sons, Duncan Duane, honorably discharged from the Marine Corps and now president of Boise Hunter Homes, and Sam Hunter, a business student at San Diego State University. Duncan D, and his wife, Margaret, have three children, Duncan Lee, Elizabeth Grace and Sarah Louise, and reside in Boise, Idaho. Sam was married on Valentines Day 2004 to the former Theresa Heger of Jamul and their daughter Marin was born in October 2006.

Hopefully gridlock, assuming the C-in-C can find his veto pen...On this point, my friend, you and I are in complete agreement.

But in some convoluted way you think that the 3rd Party will pull off an upset and win?
No, I don't. That's my dooms-day scenario. I'd much prefer that the GOP nominate a solid conservative that the base can rally around, than a party-splitter like Rudy McRomney.
Not a chance....that was tried twice before....The name was Ross Perot...didn't work real well.
If he hadn't pulled out precipitously and then re-entered the race (looking like a total loon in the process), Perot would have won in 1992. Even after the lunatic act, he still got 19% of the vote. That's staggering when you think about who his running mate was.

And if they do, like Bret Schundler did in 2001, the liberal RINOs immediately abandon ship and support the Democrats. And how is this is different than what you propose to do if Rudy or Romney get the nod?

So you are stating and satisifed with the fact that "conservatism," for all intents and purposes, is dead, right?
Huh? No, not at all. When politicians run on conservative themes (see the Democrats in 2006), they win. When Republicans run away from conservative themes, they lose.
That's all.

You kind of hit the nail on the head there (Unknowingly as usual) The Tories are a small fragmented lot of conservatives who have kept themselves in the minority because they refuse to compromise or accept other levels of conservatism. They long for the days of Winston Churchill and still live in that era and are destined to stay there.

But that's not the real point: by handing the government over to the liberals, conservatism won't move one inch forward for the next decade; in fact, we're going to lose most of the things we've accomplished -- and yes, I do mean accomplished, whether you all see them as accomplishments or not.
We're dead in the water bringing ANY conservative ideas to the country. I just cannot believe people cannot see this.

That's the kind of cutest crap that serves no useful purpose.
We're all supposed to be adults here.
It should truly be enough for posters to support a candidate of our individual choice without trashing others.

Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice,...
That's the difference. The RINOs have shown that they can't be trusted--much like their kissing-cousins, the Democrats. I have worked to get RINOs elected, only to have them pull the rug out from under conservative candidates over and over. Those days are done for me.
I'll never vote for another liberal, whether Democrat, Republican, or otherwise.

You do realize that people may disagree with you, right?
And you're saying you're not willing to put the COUNTRY ahead of YOUR agenda to keep it out of the hands of the people who tried to destoy this country back in the 60's and now, having found themselves in seats of power, are back to finish her off?
That's all fine with you? You're not willing to give an inch?

You're kidding, right? Do you know anything about the modern Tories at all? They are not conservative in any recognizable way. And they celebrate when they get up to 30% in the polls. They are a pathetic excuse for a conservative party, and I'd hate to see the Republicans follow that path.

Your historical perspective is not new to these threads. They appear on every Duncan Hunter thread that has been up.
Yes, history says it will be hard.
But, are we enslaved to history?
Has a first lady ever been elected president? Hillary is not enslaved by that historical perspective.
Has a junior senator every been elected president? Obama does not seem to be enslaved by that historical perspective.
Maybe it's time we stop throwing up at our hands at our past and write some history of our own!
To: Antoninus
When politicians run on conservative themes (see the Democrats in 2006)OMG, you seriously cannot be serious.............ROFLMAO...........you actually BELIEVE THEM? Gosh, are you ever naive!
When Republicans run away from conservative themes, they lose.
No, when the extreme right wing of the party takes their votes and goes home (yet again) we lose.
So what you have done is finally convince the GOP your vote means nothing.
And now you'll end up wandering in a vast wasteland where nobody takes you seriously.
Read my tagline; it applies to you.

Those who want to go third party will have to live with themselves and force the remainder of us to live under the democrats only there will not be a next time for an election.

Sorry, I don't have that power. I only have the power to vote my principals and know when I'm being snookered. If the GOP is destroyed, it will be a self-inflicted wound. But it won't be the finger of conservatives on the trigger.
If the party wants to leave conservatives behind in search of a "bigger tent", no problem. But don't expect us not to look for a better circus.

If that's the message they get, then 2008 will be an even worse bloodbath than I'm fearing right now.
I understand you're a party of principals gal. That's fine. You need to accept that many of us aren't and game-plan accordingly. Otherwise, prepare to embrace defeat.
