Duncan Hunter's Bio [GOP presidential contender]
Peace Through Strength PAC ^

Posted on 01/03/2007 10:20:08 AM PST by Antoninus

Since first being elected to Congress in 1980, Duncan Hunter has devoted himself to ensuring that our military is second to none, securing our nation’s borders, and protecting American workers from unfair competition. Hunter has worked on these issues not because they make headlines, but because they are the right things to do for our country.

A Vietnam veteran, Duncan Hunter has served in the 173rd Airborne and 75th Army Rangers and after returning home, utilized the G.I. Bill to attend Western State University Law School in San Diego. While completing his degree, Hunter worked in farming and construction, and opened a storefront legal office after graduation where he began serving many in the Hispanic community, often without compensation. In 1980, Hunter was asked to mount a challenge for the Congressional seat held by Lionel Van Deerlin. Despite the district having a 2-to-1 Democratic registration, Hunter won the seat in an upset.

Coming to Washington, Hunter successfully sought a seat on the House Armed Services Committee where he could work on America’s national security priorities. Serving on this committee throughout his career, Hunter became Chairman of the full committee in 2002, overseeing a $542 Billion Dollar defense budget. Hunter focuses his efforts on providing President Bush with the necessary resources to win our nation’s military conflicts, protecting our men and women in uniform, and developing modernization initiatives that will deliver new and more effective technologies to the battlefield.

Hunter also came to Congress to make securing the California-Mexico border a top priority. As a resident of a border community, Hunter’s goal was to make the region safe for communities on both sides of the border by providing border enforcement agencies with the tools they need to be effective. September 11, however, made border security a national security issue and Hunter responded by leading efforts in Congress to seal a porous border vulnerable to illegal aliens, drug trafficking and terrorism. Hunter successfully provided over 59 miles of fencing and border infrastructure to date in San Diego County, including continued construction of the Southwest Border Fence Project and fought to ensure that legislation extending the San Diego fence for 700 miles across Arizona, New Mexico and Texas became law.

Hunter’s other legislative priorities include retaining and increasing jobs across America, providing tax relief to hard-working American families, keeping our promises to American veterans, protecting Social Security for present and future generations, and promoting strong family values.

Hunter resides in El Cajon with his wife, Lynne. Like many of his constituents, he is in the process of re-building his Alpine home after it was lost in the October 2003 wildfires. In 2006, Duncan and Lynne celebrated their 33rd wedding anniversary and have two sons, Duncan Duane, honorably discharged from the Marine Corps and now president of Boise Hunter Homes, and Sam Hunter, a business student at San Diego State University. Duncan D, and his wife, Margaret, have three children, Duncan Lee, Elizabeth Grace and Sarah Louise, and reside in Boise, Idaho. Sam was married on Valentine’s Day 2004 to the former Theresa Heger of Jamul and their daughter Marin was born in October 2006.

History is fun. I started reading David McCullough's John Adams over the summer, but never finished it. I should get back into it.

But how many EX mayors who've done squat for 5 years been elected President?

I can guarantee you it's none. And while I think Guiliani could win the national election, I think he'd have a tough time winning the GOP primaries. He's just not a rank and file conservative, and even if he publicly changed positions to appear more conservative, I'm not sure he could be believed.

There are two things I like about him, though. He's obviously strong on law and order and wouldn't screw around with national security. And he's been consistently in favor of strict constructionist judges. Those are probably my two strongest hot buttons.

Don't get me wrong. I'm not on his bandwagon. But if it came down to casting a vote for him and someone who was weak on those issues, it wouldn't be a hard choice for me.

I'm not in Calif. either, never even been there. But with the Internet we can now research their views and learn more than was ever possible a few years ago.

For me, I'm afraid the internet info falls into the "looks good on paper" category. I need to hear him articulate what he believes to get a sense of his passion. I want to hear him talk about his family, his faith, and his vision. One of the first criteria I have for any public servant, is that I have to believe that he/she is a good man/woman. That he understands that his place as a public servant is to serve us, not the other way around.

I have always had that sense about W, both as TX gov and POTUS, to spite his terrible public speaking skills. He is a good man who understands what it means to put others before self.

I expect I will be pleased with the results, but I still want to hear Hunter talk.

I don't want to give you reading assignments, but after you finish that book by David McCullough, make sure to pick up a copy of his book 1776.

You'll have a whole new appreciation for George Washington.

That guy was a stud.

Definitely something working in his favor. He's an everyman.

I want to hear Hunter speak also. My point was with the Internet when the blogs etc start talking about him the MSM will start covering him as a serious candidate. Then we will hear him.

A year is enough time to correct this, and thanks to the internet, talk radio, and Fox News, it can happen

It already is happening: Every single person who says "no one knows who he is" now knows who Duncan Hunter is. And, he's holding onto a 51% Support/Strongly Support plurality in the FReepPoll. And, his name recognition will only increase as time progresses.

"How well did that strategy work out in 1996?"

And that was the only Time in the last 40 years when the front runner that we ran (who was not an incumbent lost).

I do not advocate that as a practice.that is just the way it works out. this time it seems like there really i no one else to challenge that is credible than these three. so I would not look for alternative because there is less likely there will be one. The last time a true dark horse won the GOP nomination was 1940 and wilkie did not run so well either. And before that it was Harding(thanks to a deadlocked convention.). He won but, oh well! The only time before that was Garfield. Only three times in Republican history has a dark horse won. we Republicans just don't do that.

If the Iraqis keep this up, they're going to cause an actual coronary on an MSM set somewhere.

So we're way past overdue!!! ;^)

Stay positive!

Do you have more info on this? When others posted similar statements, I went looking for support and instead found this. Rudy praising Ginsburg and Earl Warren was not encouraging.
