Obama's Youthful Drug Use May Recieve Closer Scrutiny (Pot, Cocaine)
The New York Sun & Washington Post ^ | January 3, 2007 | Lois Romano

WASHINGTON — Long before the national press spotlight began to shine on every twist and turn of his life's journey, Senator Obama had this to say about himself: "Junkie. Pothead.

'That's where I'd been headed: the final, fatal role of the young would-be black man. ... I got high [to] push questions of who I was out of my mind."

The Democratic senator from Illinois and likely presidential candidate offered the confession in a memoir written 11 years ago, not long after he graduated from law school and well before he contemplated life on the national stage.

At the time, 20,000 copies were printed and the book seemed destined for the remainders stacks.

Mr. Obama's confessions were not an issue during his Senate campaign two years ago. But now his open narrative of early, bad choices, including drug use starting in high school and ending in college, as well as his tortured search for racial identity, are sure to receive new scrutiny.

As a potential candidate, Mr. Obama has presented himself as a fresh voice offering a politics of hope.

Many say he offers something new in American politics: an African American with a less-than-traditional name who has so far demonstrated broad appeal. What remains to be seen is whether the candor he offered in his early memoir will be greeted with a new-style acceptance by voters.

Through his book, Mr. Obama has become the first potential presidential contender to confess to trying cocaine.

I bet no one has even had the stones to ask Hillary the same question about drug use that politicians always get pounded over.

This is a warning to the kind of stuff he would face from Hills during the campaign.

If his only vice is that he's a coke head, then he's a better choice than I thought. Hillary had better be careful leveling that charge. They can come around to bite you.

Actually, if the media were to treat Obama the same way that they treated Bush during his campaigns, they would have waited until two or three days before the election to break the story about Obama's drug use. As it is, this will be old news long befor the primaries.

Why?

Obama smokes cigarettes today. I suspect the liberals will be more upset about that than his past drug use.

You're right about that. I think it raises serious questions about his health, too. Maybe he needs to release all of his medical records. Does he have emphazema? Cancer? Heart disease?

The only issues I see are: (1) whether or not he's changed, and (2) what his support is for drug trafficking and use.

From Diana in Wisconsin's All You Need to Know About Obama list:

"Obama refused to vote for a bill in the Illinois State Senate that would have increased penalties for drug traffickers."

I seriously doubt that.

I am so cynical as to believe this won't make a difference. He's a dem, and he's black.

You are probably right. I think that Mrs. Clinton and her camp are behind this. It will be interesting to watch the MSMs and see if they paint him as a reformed hero, the poor black guy who rose above that behavior, or will we see a drumbeat that he has this stain and is just not qualified.

I was wondering the same thing. Not that Senator Obama is not an interesting guy, but 11 years ago he held no office, or at least no major one.
