"NBC News, which first reported Negroponte's resignation, said his likely successor is retired Adm. Mike McConnell, the director of the National Security Agency from 1992 to 1996.

McConnell is now a senior vice president at Booz Allen Hamilton, a government contractor and consulting agency."

False crash rescue reports shameful, says angry media
Sydney Morning Herald ^ | January 4 2007 | na

JAKARTA: Indonesia's media has accused authorities of lying after officials erroneously reported that rescuers had found wreckage and survivors from a missing airliner carrying 102 people.

"The people have been lied to," said the Pikiran Umum daily yesterday, as searchers hunted for the Adam Air Boeing 737 which vanished from radar screens on Monday en route from Java to Sulawesi. "More embarrassingly, this news has been spread not just locally but all over the world," the newspaper said.

Much of the press said the false reports exacerbated the tragedy for relatives waiting for news. A front-page article in the Rakyat Merdeka newspaper called the misinformation a "national scam".

"How is it that the whole of Indonesia can be blatantly lied to? From the president, the vice-president, ministers and right down to the public, they were totally blinded," the article read.

"This is a national communication and information tragedy. It's shameful."

The Jakarta Post agreed: "Relatives' anguish grows with false news," its front page read.

? Twelve men on board a ferry that sank on Friday en route from Borneo to Java were found alive yesterday. They had clambered onto an unmanned offshore oil rig, navy officers said. At least 212 people have been found alive but some 400 remain missing.
