Worldwide Caution Public Announcement
U.S. Embassy Brasilia issued the following Warden Message on January 10:

This warden message is to alert American citizens living in or traveling to Rio de Janeiro to an increase in gang activity in the city of Rio de Janeiro. American Citizens are reminded to take great care when traveling on public transportation in the city of Rio de Janeiro. Although there is no evidence that American citizens have been targeted, recent criminal gang activity has targeted public transportation. Several people were killed as a result of recent attacks. There is a possibility of further attacks targeting public transportation. American citizens are advised to review their personal security and take precautions when necessary.

For the latest security information, Americans traveling abroad should regularly monitor the Department's Internet website at http://travel.state.gov where the current Worldwide Caution Public Announcement, Travel Warnings and Public Announcements can be found. Specific information on Brazil may be found in the Consular Information Sheet at http://travel.state.gov/travel/cis_pa_tw/cis/cis_1072.html . Up to date information on security can also be obtained by calling 1-888-407-4747 toll free in the United States, or, for callers outside the United States and Canada, a regular toll line at 1-202-501-4444. These numbers are available from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Eastern Time, Monday through Friday (except U.S. federal holidays). American citizens traveling or residing overseas are encouraged to register with the appropriate U.S. Embassy or Consulate on the State Department's travel registration website at https://travelregistration.state.gov
