Unknown assailants using gas cannister-based explosives attacked two Greek banks

ATHENS. Jan 25, 2007. Unknown assailants using gas cannister-based explosives attacked two Greek banks in central Athens on Thursday night, a police source said, quoted by AFP.

Situated a block apart on one of Athens' central streets, the two branches, respectively of the Emporiki and National Bank of Greece chains, suffered minor damage, the fire department said. Arson attacks against Greek and foreign banks and car dealerships are commonplace in Athens, usually occurring in the early hours of the morning and timed to cause no injury. The authorities suspect it to be the work of self-styled anarchist groups.

Karachi, 26 Jan. 2007 - A former close aide of Osama bin Laden, who was also a former official with Pakistan's powerful secret service Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) during the 1980s, Khalid Khawaja was allegedly picked up by Pakistan's military intelligence early Friday morning, family sources told Adnkronos International (AKI). A retired Pakistan Air Force squadron leader, Khawaja is currently the chief coodinator of the Islamic Centre for Research and Defence of Human Rights, an organisation which campaigns on the behalf of relatives of terrorism suspects who have "disappeared".

"He went to say his morning prayers in his (Islamabad) neighbourhood mosque and did not come back," Khawaja’s son Osama Khalid told Adnkronos International (AKI) in a telephone interview. "I spoke to the prayer leader of the mosque but he maintained that Khawaja comes every day to say his prayers but this morning he did not show up," he said.

Khalid Khawaja was a senior official of ISI when it was fuelling jihadi resistance movements against the Soviets in Afghanistan. Report: Thousands of Iranian agents in Iraq
Jan. 26, 2007

Iran has thousands of paid operatives working in neighboring Iraq, an Iranian opposition group based in France said Friday, and it released the names of nearly 32,000 people it alleged were involved.

The National Council of Resistance's allegations could not be independently verified. And a press officer at the Iranian Embassy in Paris, speaking on condition of anonymity because of embassy policy, called the claims "completely false" and said Tehran supports stability in the region.

The council is the political wing of the People's Mujahedeen of Iran, which advocates the overthrow of Iran's Islamic government. The council has been based in France since shortly after the 1979 Islamic revolution.

Mohammad Mohaddessin, who heads the council's foreign affairs committee, alleged that thousands of Iraqis are working on Iran's behalf.

ETA terrorist had 'planned to attack Americas Cup'
26 January 2007

BARCELONA — An arrested Eta terrorist was planning to carry out an attack on the Americas Cup planned for Valencia later this year, police said on Friday.

Íker Aguirre Bernadal, 26, was arrested on Thursday on a train between Perpignan and Barcelona carrying bomb-making plans, EUR 3,000 in cash and documents with false identities. Anti-terrorist police sources said Aguirre had been sent to plan an attack on the international yachting regatta by the Basque separatist group's military leader Garikoitz Aspiazu, known as 'Txeroki'.

The Americas Cup is due to start in April and reaches its climax in July. It will be opened by the King of Spain Juan Carlos, who has previously been the target of Eta assassination plots. The competition is expected to attract celebrities and royal families from around the world.

Anti-terrorist sources said it appeared Eta was attempting to set up a 'commando' cell in Spain to carry out bomb attacks on the world's biggest yachting regatta. Agents on the French-Spanish border to stop terrorists entering the country spotted Aguirre, who is wanted in relation to a series of Eta attacks in the Basque Country in 2004.
