:::FreeRepublic's Threat Matrix:::
Fighting Jihad: Strategic Thinking Needed
-Full Story-

The United States of America has some of the smartest leaders in government, military, and business in the world. Yet the American government has failed to collectively use this formidable brain-power 5+ years after the attack by Jihadists on the American homeland to develop a truly strategic plan to fight the global threat of Jihad and Islamist extremism. In one of the most complex wars in American history, rather than starting with holistic, big-picture thinking towards the challenges and prioritizing resources and actions accordingly, America has spent much of the past five years after 9/11 in reactive and bureaucratic churning.

Threat Matrix : Code of Conduct
Please pay close attention:
PLEASE FOLLOW THE RULES

***Updated FR Excerpt and Link Only or Deny Posting List due to Copyright Complaints***

There will be NO bashing any mods, it will be taken private or there will be NO MORE Threat Matrix !!! That comes from the top!

Please everyone here review the following rules, they are not posted just for fun, they must be adhered to!

Do lead by example - Nothing improves a forum more than posters who reason sharply, write well, and have some perspective about it all. Be one of them.

Do preview - Preview twice, post once. And, ahem, close your HTML tags before you hit the reply button.

Do keep it clean - A bruise or two between Freepers is tolerable, but refrain from abusive attacks, engaging in senseless flame wars, and using profane language. Considering the range of topics we discuss, it's hard to be a family site, but that's what we aim for when at all possible.

Do "take it to the Alley" - The Alley is a public chat room. A link to it is provided on the latest posts page. Invite people there if you want to talk things over or settle a score, so to speak, off site.

Do use common sense - If you read a post that sounds too good or strange to be true, it probably is.

Do stay on topic - FR has varied topics for whatever you need to say

Do keep "vanity" posts to a minimum - Free Republic is primarily a place to discuss news, articles, and editorials. Vanity posts, creations of the poster him or herself, should meet a high standard of quality before one is even considered worthy of posting.

Don't jump threads - If you get involved in an argument in one thread, it's considered poor manners to restart the previous argument in the middle of an unrelated thread.

Don't play games - Don't represent yourself as another person, create or use another screen name to avoid a revocation of posting privileges, misrepresent the site or your role in it

We cannot stress the following enough:
{{{Don't be a whiner - If you really, really find Free Republic or Threat Matrix not to your liking, let the webmaster know directly (jimrob@psnw.com), learn to live with it, or move along.}}}

'Dirty bomb' attack could cripple economy: CSIS
Tue. Jan. 2 2007 8:48 PM ET

OTTAWA -- Canada's spy agency says it is "quite surprising" that terrorists have not detonated a crude radioactive bomb, given the availability of materials and ease with which they could be made into a weapon.

A newly released Canadian Security Intelligence Service study concludes a so-called dirty bomb is the most likely means of deliberately spreading deadly radiation. But the CSIS study cautions that "a determined and resourceful terrorist group" could execute more elaborate forms of nuclear or radiological attack.

It says extremists could conceivably acquire an existing nuclear explosive device, fashion an improvised weapon from black-market material or sabotage a nuclear facility with the aim of triggering a radioactive release. A copy of the October study was obtained by The Canadian Press under the Access to Information Act.

German Muslim with American family detained, denied U.S. entry
Tue, Jan. 02, 2007

A German businessman of Syrian descent who wanted to surprise his daughter with a holiday visit was detained for four days in a Las Vegas holding cell before being sent back home without explanation.

A civil rights group called authorities' treatment of Majed Shehadeh a case of anti-Muslim discrimination.

Shehadeh, 62, flew from Frankfurt to Las Vegas last Thursday, hoping to meet with his wife and drive to Bakersfield, Calif., where his American-born daughter had just gotten news she'd passed the California bar exam. Instead, he wound up shivering in a holding cell without ever being told why he couldn't enter the country, he said.

Roxanne Hercules, a spokeswoman for U.S. Customs and Border Protection, confirmed Tuesday that Shehadeh was denied entry, but would not discuss specifics of his case. She said Shehadeh's visa waiver could have been denied because "he could have a criminal record, or it could be a terrorism issue."

Kosovo Serb shot for reclaiming own home

January 2, 2007 -- A Kosovo Serb, Vladimir Radosavljevic and his wife Bosiljka were shot at in the Kosovo Muslim Albanian stronghold of Klina after Radosavljevic filed papers with the Kosovo Housing and Property Directorate to have his illegally confiscated home returned.

Radosavljevic's were asleep when unidentified gunmen fired a round from an automatic weapon at their temporary shelter in Kosovo town of Klina where they were awaiting the authorities to evict the illegal Muslim Albanian occupiers of their property.

Police found 23 bullets among the broken glass and empty chargers in the street. The evidence, according to the police, suggests that the attackers used a Kalashnikov AK-47 in the shooting. Radosavljevic's were then evacuated from the premises by the police and placed in the apartment of their relatives in downtown Klina. Police made a statement that an investigation is in progress. In 1999, Radosavljevic's family fled Klina fearing Kosovo Muslim violence. Their home was then illegally occupied by a member of the Kosovo Liberation Army, a Muslim Albanian guerrilla force, who then rented the house to two other Muslim Albanians.

Alleged terrorist's assets seized in Albania
January 2, 2007

Albanian authorities have moved to block another set of properties belonging to alleged al-Qaeda terrorist Yasin al-Qadi.

Albanian authorities announced late last month that they have frozen more assets of an alleged associate of Osama bin Laden. According to the Finance Ministry, four apartments, a house, four bars and shops, as well as two hectares of land were seized. A spokesman for the ministry declined to give an exact figure regarding their value.

The property belongs to Yasin al-Qadi, a Saudi businessman whom the US Treasury Department has designated a global terrorist, and who is also on a UN Security Council list of suspected terrorists. He allegedly channeled funds to al-Qaeda via a foundation he headed.

Al-Qadi, who left Albania years ago, is thought to be associated with Abdul Latif Saleh, who holds Jordanian and Albanian citizenship and is suspected of being linked to Egypt's Islamic Jihad, a terror group connected to al-Qaeda. The United States has alleged that bin Laden provided Saleh with funds to encourage the formation of extremist groups in Albania.

Saleh set up an Albanian jihadist organisation, financed by the al-Haramain Foundation, with the goal of destabilising Albania by "fomenting conflict among the different religious groups in the country", according to the US Treasury Department.

Qaeda-LJ link in terror attacks
January 1, 2007

* Investigators say Qaeda, Lashkar and Mehsud killed Allama Turabi
* Bombs used in suicide attacks in Karachi prepared in tribal areas

KARACHI: After investigating the three bomb blasts that took place in Karachi in 2006, the police have come to the conclusion that terrorist groups with different priorities have ganged up. They are specifically worried about the Laskhar-e-Jhangvi, Al Qaeda and the Abdullah Mehsud-led group of Afghanistan.

The first suicide bombing took place on March 3 behind the US Consulate, killing diplomat David Foy and three others. Two men, Anwarul Haq and Usman Ghani, are being tried in an anti-terrorism court for the attack. The alleged suicide bomber was identified as Raja Mohammad Tahir, a resident of Karachi, who had spent time in Afghanistan and Wana and had alleged links with Al Qaeda. The car that was used in the attack had been fitted with the explosives in Wana, the police claim.

The second suicide bombing took place about a month later, on April 11, at Nishtar Park at an Eid Miladun Nabi prayer congregation. More than 60 people died, including the entire top hierarchy of the Sunni Tehreek (of the Barelvi school of thought). During investigations, the police, who termed it the biggest terrorist attack of the year, began to suspect that it was sectarian.

“Up till now this case could not be solved completely,” said a senior CID investigator, who did not wish to be named. “But what has surfaced is that the Nishtar Park bombing was about a sectarian clash.”

The third suicide attack was on July 14 in which Allama Hasan Turabi was killed along with his nephew outside his house in Gulshan-e-Iqbal. During investigations, the police caught a group from Karachi and identified the suicide attacker as a 16-year-old of Bengali origin named Abdul Karim from Karachi. The police followed clues that took them to Wana in this case, leading them to conclude that the LJ, Al Qaeda and the Abdullah Mehsud-led group of Afghanistan were behind the job.

Investigators told Daily Times that some LJ men with links to Karachi went to Wana where they got in touch with the Abdullah Mehsud-led group. They then befriended Abdullah Mehsud’s cousin, Abid Mehsud. Through Abid they developed more links with Al Qaeda in Karachi and upon Abid’s advice roped in some young men from Orangi Town.

The jacket that was used in the Turabi suicide attack had been prepared in Darra Adam Khel by a man the investigators called Hazrat Ali, who was found dead after an explosion in a house in the area.

CID investigators said that for the first time it has been proved that LJ and Al Qaeda worked together in the sectarian case. Karim, who allegedly killed Turabi, was, however, neither linked to the LJ nor Al Qaeda, investigators pointed out, saying that they believed he was brainwashed into doing the job.

Interesting that this attack by the Taliban came from inside Pakistan

Militants rocket Afghan district from Pakistan

SHARAN, Dec 31 (Pajhwok Afghan News): Officials in the southeastern province of Paktika said Sunday Taliban fighters have fired 20 rockets from Pakistan on a border district of Afghanistan.

Paktika governor Dr Akram Khpalwak told Pajhwok Afghan News all the rockets fired Saturday evening hit Barmal district, but did not cause any casualties since they landed in farms and uninhabited areas in villages. The attack, however, has caused heavy material losses for people, said the governor.

Khpalwak blamed Pakistan for sending militants to Afghanistan for fighting and allowing them to use the Pakistani soil for attacks on border areas of Afghanistan. He said antigovernment elements were crossing the joint border from the neighboring country and were returning back after conducting attacks in Afghanistan.

Barmal district was visited the same day by defence minister Gen. Abdul Rahim Wardak to encourage the national army soldiers for protection of their land by participating with them in the in the Eid festival.

I don't believe a newborn American is inherently more intelligent than a newborn Russian, Inuit, Irani or Aussie.

I believe the fact that the U.S. is a free country is the difference. In spite of our public educational system, young people grow up surrounded by freedom and the thirst for sharing freedom with other peoples.

The other factor that can't be ignored is that the U.S. is strong and uses that strength for the benefit of the World in a quest for spreading freedom beyond it's current bounds.

In one of the most complex wars in American history, rather than starting with holistic, big-picture thinking towards the challenges and prioritizing resources and actions accordingly, America has spent much of the past five years after 9/11 in reactive and bureaucratic churning.

The problem is that about half of the country doesn't understand (doesn't WANT to understand) that we're in a war - a war that has been declared on us because of who we are, i.e. the leading Western power. Sadly, roughly half of our "leaders" (i.e. most of the Dem Party, and some Republicans) are either too stupid to understand what's going on, or they're not taking it seriously and using/fanning doubts about the war to serve their own political interests. The dinosaur media, which most of the public still pays attention to, is largely a cheerleader for the enemy, further compounding the problem.

IOW, we're fighting a very limited engagement with our hands tied behind our back. Welcome to the first PC war (and hopefully the last). I pray that we survive despite ourselves, and learn the appropriate lessons. Bismarck's quote "God protects fools, drunks and the United States" remains accurate, as does Churchill's that "the Americans always do the right thing, after trying everything else first."
