:::FreeRepublic's Threat Matrix:::
Fighting Jihad: Strategic Thinking Needed
-Full Story-

The United States of America has some of the smartest leaders in government, military, and business in the world. Yet the American government has failed to collectively use this formidable brain-power 5+ years after the attack by Jihadists on the American homeland to develop a truly strategic plan to fight the global threat of Jihad and Islamist extremism. In one of the most complex wars in American history, rather than starting with holistic, big-picture thinking towards the challenges and prioritizing resources and actions accordingly, America has spent much of the past five years after 9/11 in reactive and bureaucratic churning.

Hi MamaD - great to see you here.

The Kelly's spies article is a excellent example of what should be done. Hopefully our LE is doing the same here in the US. After all, the used to infiltrate the mafia so why not the islamo-mafia.

Seven Abu Sayyaf Rebels Killed In Clash In Southern Philippines
Dec.,6,2007

At least seven Islamist Abu Sayyaf rebels were killed late Saturday in a clash with government troops in the southern Philippines, a navy commander said. Commodore Geronimo Defensor said the clash erupted when pursuing marines caught up with the guerrillas near the seashore of Balimbing island in Tawi-Tawi province, 1,050 kilometres south of Manila.

Defensor said among those killed was Abu Sayyaf commander Jundam Jamalul, alias Black Killer, who has a 40,000-dollar bounty on his head offered by the United States government for his involvement in the kidnapping of western tourists in Malaysia's Sipadan island in 2000.

"There was initial tracking of the bandits on Friday night in nearby Capual island," he said. "Our troops finally caught up with them in Balimbing." Defensor said the government troops did not suffer any casualties during the clash. The troops also recovered firearms and the twin-engine motor boat used by the rebels.

The military have launched an offensive against the al-Qaeda- linked Islamist Abu Sayyaf rebels since August last year on the nearby island of Jolo. Abu Sayyaf is the smallest but most violent Islamist rebel group in the southern Philippines. The rebels were blamed for deadly terror attacks in the country.

London plot suspect says he's innocent
Fri Jan 5, 2007

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan - A British Muslim suspected in an alleged plot to blow up trans-Atlantic jetliners flying from Britain last summer reiterated his innocence Friday after a judge extended his detention for two more weeks.

"I am innocent," Rashid Rauf told reporters in Rawalpindi, a garrison city near capital of Islamabad. "I ask Pakistan government to do me justice," said the thin, bearded man wearing a traditional Pakistani loose robe and a prayer cap.

Rauf, who also has a Pakistani passport, was arrested by Pakistani intelligence agents in August on a tip from their British counterparts. At the time, Pakistan identified him as a key suspect in the alleged terror plot, sparking a security alert in Britain that saw mass cancellations of flights to and from Heathrow Airport for several days in August and increased restrictions on carry-on items.

However, a Pakistani anti-terrorism court dropped terrorism charges against Rauf on Dec. 13 and held him accountable only for possessing bomb-making materials and living in Pakistan without valid documents. Later, a higher court — acting on an appeal by Pakistani authorities — suspended the anti-terrorism court's ruling until Jan. 15.

On Friday, Rauf was brought before a judge who extended his detention until Jan. 19. His lawyer, Hashmat Habib, said his client had been implicated in a false case, and that he would prove his innocence. He said no date has been set by the court for the start of the trial. Rauf arrived in Pakistan soon after his uncle was stabbed to death in 2002. Pakistan has said British authorities had asked Pakistan to extradite Rauf in connection with a murder inquiry. Pakistan and Britain do not have an extradition treaty, and Pakistani officials have said that no decision has been made on the extradition request.

Mullah says US humiliated in Iran's nuclear case
Jan 5, 2007

Substitute Friday prayers leader of Tehran mullah Ahmad Khatami said here that the US was humiliated in Iran's nuclear case. "The US was humiliated in Iran's peaceful nuclear case as the world people observed it," said Khatami, who is also an all-mullah 'Experts Assembly' member, in his first Friday prayers sermon to group of bassijis in Tehran University campus on Friday.

Mullah said Americans suffered disgrace and humiliating defeat in Lebanon, Afghanistan and Iraq too. He then quoted a westerner as point to west's intention to humiliate Iran in its nuclear case and said, "Iran can not be humiliated." "One of the westerners had said that in nuclear energy issue we want to humiliate Iran, while Iran can't be downgraded and it is and will always remain dear; this means Americans' lack of wisdom."

Hamas to Abbas: Reject US money
Jan. 5, 2007

Palestinian legislator and Hamas supporter Mushir al-Musri called upon Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas on Friday to refuse to receive funds from the USA. The accusation follows a report that the Bush Administration intends to transfer $86.4 million to the security branches of Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas.

Al-Masri accused Washington of assisting the 'revolution' against the Hamas government. "We demand that Chairman Abbas reject this American policy which only increases the rift in the Palestinian nation," al-Masri said.

GSPC in a message: We are awaiting Ben Laden’s instructions (Algeria)
January 6, 2007

Salafist Group for Preaching and Combat (GSPC) has refused to give up armed fighting as it was called for by President of the Republic, Abdelaziz Bouteflika, in his speech before Nation’s executives on December 26. The GSPC invited Home Minister to tell the “truth” about security situation in Algeria.

The Salafist Group is awaiting Ben Laden’s “instructions” for the coming stage, it adds. Abdelmalek Droukdal alias Abu Musaab Abdelouadoud, Chief of the GSPC, released via internet a long message dated December 3, in which he rejects the President’s call, saying the Salafist Group “is determined to carry on its path”. Headed “Word”, the message explained that GSPC which came out of the GIA (Islamic Armed Group) in the Fall 1998 got no foreign support. Yet, it is mentioned that the group had obtained lately quantities of arms and ammunition.

The Salafist Group has unprecedently admitted it was assisted by foreign persons to carry out terrorist attacks, “young men are getting up and are keen to bear arms from inside the country and from abroad as well”, said Droukdal who made a call foreigners as well as Algerians to join his rows.

El Khabar had previously published stories on Tunisians, Libyans, Moroccans and some people from African Sahel who have been fighting –until now- under the banner of the GSPC. El Khabar also mentioned some Algerian young men joined the group lately. Abdelouadoud invited Interior Minister, Yazid Zerhouni, to “disclose the real figure about the young men who have joined Jihad ground in the last months”. It is wrong to speak of “residual terrorists”, adds the message mentioning latest terrorist attacks.

The message also addressed to what it called “our dearest Abi Abdallah Usama Ben Laden”, renewing allegiance to him, and qualifying GSPC’s members of Ben Laden’s soldiers. The United States and NATO are supporting, logistically and financially, African Sahel countries “to fight us”, he explains adding “evil axis” has started to move after we announced allegiance to al-Qaeda in mid-September. “We are awaiting your instructions and recommendations for next stage”, Abu Musab Abdelouadoud affirmed addressing Ben Laden.

Mulla Omar’s elusiveness creating cult-like devotion
Saturday, January 06, 2007

LAHORE: It has been more than five years since the Taliban’s supreme leader, Mulla Omar, vanished into the trackless terrain outside Kandahar, and his likeliest source of sanctuary is thought to be the belt of rugged tribal territory straddling the Afghanistan-Pakistan border.

According to a report in the Los Angeles Times, in Kuchlak – a dusty desert crossroads in Balochistan – Mullah Omar is still referred to by the title of amir al-mominin, or commander of the faithful. The report said that Omar’s feat of eluding a long manhunt by the Americans and their allies was celebrated in Kuchlak as proof of his “mystical powers”.

“With all their sophisticated satellites, they cannot find him,” said Fazil Mohammad Baraich, a district chieftain. “It is no surprise that God protects him … this increases our faith.” To admirers, the near-completeness of Omar’s vanishing act after fleeing his compound outside Kandahar in 2001 is a triumphant rebuttal of the allies’ characterisations of him as a simpleton. “If that is the case, why has he been able to hide so well and for so long?” said Baraich.

Rumours of Omar sightings abound, and are repeated by locals with an air of satisfied certainty. “I have heard on good authority that he is living in a camp in the military enclave outside Quetta,” the report quoted Muhammed Ashiq, head of a merchants’ association in that provincial capital, as saying. The report said that in tribal communities such as Kuchlak, sympathy for the Taliban was “undiminished”. It said that the cult-like devotion to Omar in mosques and makeshift classrooms of tribal territories helped ensure a “steady supply of Taliban fighters”.

Kuchlak, 10 miles north of Quetta, is a convenient way station for anybody looking to move surreptitiously in and out of the tribal belt. One road out of town leads north to the Afghan border and continues to Kandahar, while another, with only a single police checkpoint in more than 100 miles, leads to Waziristan. Because of Omar’s longtime aversion to being photographed, few in the border hinterlands would be in a position to positively identify him. The report said that in any event, many observers believed that betrayal from within Omar’s tribal milieu would be unthinkable.

"Nuclear plant target for stolen rocket launchers, police allege (5 in the hands of terrorist group)"
Sydney Morning Herald ^ | January 6, 2007 | Les Kennedy and Craig Skehan

Posted on 01/05/2007 7:42:51 AM PST by dead

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "Asked if the man arrested yesterday was linked to the group that allegedly made threats to attack facilities including Lucas Heights, he said: "Yes, he is."

The investigation into the stolen launchers is understood to focus on private security patrols of military facilities.

After his arrest yesterday, Abdul-Rahman was charged with offences relating to the theft and procurement of the rocket launchers.

According to court documents, police allege he is a second or third link in a chain that passed the weapons on to others after he acquired them from an unknown source, who got them from within the military. Abdul-Rahman is then alleged to have sold all seven to Darwiche for his alleged use in the drug war.

It is alleged Darwiche, now serving a double life sentence in the supermax high-security prison at Goulburn, sold five of them to the terrorist group with cells in Sydney's south-west and Melbourne.

Abdul-Rahman was taken to Sydney's Central Local Court late yesterday charged with 17 terrorism related offences.

They include two counts of dishonestly receiving stolen property, and seven counts of unauthorised possession of a prohibited weapon.

He was also charged with possession of ammunition under section 65 of the Ammunition and Firearms Act 1996.

His solicitor, Sam Abbas, told the magistrate, Robyn Denes, he did not want his client to be taken from underground cells and brought before the court.

With Abdul-Rahman's partner watching quietly from the public gallery, Mr Abbas said his client was not seeking bail, nor entering a plea but would make a bail application next Wednesday via video link.

Mr Kaldas said there was a wider investigation into links between the criminal world and terrorism in Australia.

"The line between criminality and politically motivated acts of terrorism is blurring worldwide," Mr Kaldas said. "We are open minded on whether other rockets have fallen into the hands of terror groups.""

"Abu Mussâb unveils a “war plan” in the Maghreb States
Hassan Hattab joins GSPC fiefdoms"

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "Abu Mussâb renewed in the communiqué GSPC insistence on carrying on “terror” and revealed phone calls he had with Al Qaeda second chief stating: “we discussed pure military issues … we joined the real Islamist organisation under the leadership of our brother and supreme chief Ayman Al-Zawahri”. What is amazing is that this quotation does not refer to Al Qaeda leader Osama Ben Laden. His speech gives the impression that Al-Zawahri is the universal jihad organisation effective leader. It highlights whether the matter is related to French Information services reports speculating Ben Laden death by a deadly illness.

The report is aired a month after the GSPC affiliation to Al Qaeda.
Abdul Wadud stated: “the next communiqué will enshrine the Arab Maghreb war plan explanation”, underscoring the GSPC affiliation to Al Qaeda as a prelude to a terrorist organization targeting Maghreb States and the western interests over there."

You've got that right!

Thanks for the ping Cindy.

Fellow Canadians, do you realize whats happening?
This Muslim is being harassed and threatened, in the name of Islam, because he (appears to) accept North American/Western values.

If they will do this to one of their own (much like dems and libs), we will surely be next.

Mark Steyn is right. They are just waiting for the demographics to go in their favour.
And that, my FRiends, is not far off. Anywhere.

Canada ping.

Please send me a FReepmail to get on or off this Canada ping list.

FBI probes death threat against Muslim leader

Basim Elkarra has received an email death threat, and the wheels of justice are turning quickly: the FBI has launched an investigation, and AP has published the story below.

Memo to AP: I myself have received numerous email death threats from Islamic jihadists. In addition, I was even named by Al-Qaeda's Adam Gadahn in a videotape introduced by Al-Zawahri himself. Yet you have never found any of this worthy of note. This isn't about me personally -- it is about what you choose to tell the public, and what you don't, and why. One would think that death threats are all equally odious and newsworthy, no? Yet apparently they aren't -- can you explain why? You can contact me here, at director@jihadwatch.org.

SACRAMENTO - The FBI said that it is investigating a death threat sent to the leader of a local Muslim group after US Sen. Barbara Boxer rescinded a certificate her office had awarded to him.

Special Agent Karen Ernst said Friday the bureau launched an investigation after Basim Elkarra reported receiving a threatening e-mail.

Elkarra, executive director of the Sacramento chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, received a certificate of accomplishment from Boxer’s office in November recognizing his oustanding service.’

Elkarra said the award reflected his group’s efforts to establish good relations with Christians, Jews, minority groups and the FBI.

After the certificate was awarded, Boxer read a Web log linking her to the council and accusing it of pro-terrorist activities, including refusing to condemn Osama bin Laden by name.

Boxer asked her staff to investigate, and her office sent a letter withdrawing the certificate on Dec. 21, her communications director, Natalie Ravitz, said Thursday.

Ravitz said two of the council’s former members were sentenced to prison for crimes related to terrorist groups. She also said CAIR had refused to label Hamas and Hezbollah as terrorist organizations.

There is more to it than that, also.

CAIR’s national leaders denied that the group had terrorist ties or sympathies and accused Boxer of caving in to anti-Muslim extremists.

It would be refreshing if CAIR would be so kind as to address specific concerns in this area. My questions still remain unanswered, Ibrahim.
