Fighting Jihad: Strategic Thinking Needed
-Full Story-

The United States of America has some of the smartest leaders in government, military, and business in the world. Yet the American government has failed to collectively use this formidable brain-power 5+ years after the attack by Jihadists on the American homeland to develop a truly strategic plan to fight the global threat of Jihad and Islamist extremism. In one of the most complex wars in American history, rather than starting with holistic, big-picture thinking towards the challenges and prioritizing resources and actions accordingly, America has spent much of the past five years after 9/11 in reactive and bureaucratic churning.

Jund Allah promise attack on Jerusalem, soon

The following was posted to a forum on 24 January 2007. The site is representative of the genuine (i.e. Lebanon and West Bank) Palestinian jihadis of the al-Qaida variety.


The author says that the mujahedeen will soon attack Jerusalem, and refers to the supposed attackers as the Jund Allah. A quick and dirty analysis of this follows:

1. It is not clear that the author himself is Palestinian, and much of his other postings involve copying items from other forums.

2. On the other hand, this promise of an attack on Jerusalem has not been seen elsewhere.

3. The author's Arabic appears genuine.

4. There was previously a Jund Allah in Lebanon, composed in part of Palestinian refugees.

5. There was a previous announcement from a Jund Allah group in the West Bank, but that group is a faction of Fatah/Shuhadaa al-Aqsa in Nablus, and there is no reason to think they are connected to this.

Islamic Jihad: Suicide bomber came from Jordan

A spokesperson for Islamic Jihad's military wing, the al-Quds Brigades, said that the suicide bomber who blew himself up in Eilat on Monday made his way to the southern resort city from Jordan.

He said the attack is part of Operation Ice Thawing and is in response to ongoing Israel aggressions against Palestinian gunmen in the West Bank.

"Nigerian militants in jail raid"

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "About 50 members of a militant group have stormed through the Nigerian city of Port Harcourt and sprung a gang leader from jail, the group says.

Sobomabo George was described by the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta as a senior leader.

Eyewitnesses said the gang, armed with machine guns, stormed through eastern Port Harcourt and raided the police station where he was being held.

Officials said one passer-by was killed in the assault.

This was a dramatic illustration of the Niger Delta's insecurity with Nigerian elections just months away.

The trouble began with the arrest of Sobomabo George, a gang leader with militant connections. He controls a gang called The Outlaws, one of many such groups operating in the Niger Delta."

Has anyone seen an article yet re: the Nat'l Guardsmen that had to retreat from high powered weapon carrying men somewhere along the Arizona border?

Of course under their orders they cannot and I repeat cannot arrest, question or raise a weapon against these guys. One of these days something is going to happen to one of these young men who are put there just for window dressing it appears.

Two charged in Britain with terrorism offenses after raids

LONDON: Two men arrested last week after police raids in northern England were charged Monday under Britain's Terrorism Act, police said.

A statement from London's Metropolitan Police said the men, 29-year-old Rizwan Ditta and 25-year-old Mohammad Dilal, possessed computer files and compact discs containing information useful to a person committing or planning an act of terrorism.

Police said the material was found after searches of properties in Halifax, 200 miles (320 kilometers) north of London, and included computer files entitled "Attack Against American Troops," "Hamas Bomb," and "Instructions." One of the compact discs had a clip entitled "al-Qaida," police said in a statement.

Pride, grief and anger at a Taliban recruiting area in Pakistan

SHABQADAR, Pakistan - Near Pakistan's border with Afghanistan, pride mixes with grief and anger over dozens of young men lost to a stepped-up recruiting drive for the Taliban. Like the anti-Soviet rebels of the 1980s and the pre-9/11 Taliban, the recruiters of today have turned to this cluster of about 25 ethnic Pashtun villages in search of volunteers.

The father of one dead enlistee says he feels honoured, but with many of Shabqadar's young men dead or feared missing on the battlefield, mujaheddin recruiters are no longer welcome here. A shopkeeper says 100 or more young men have gone missing, including his cousin, a 10th grade student, who mysteriously left home during the summer vacation and is believed to have gone to fight.

People here are religious, and recruiters play on that sentiment, "recruiting the youth with raw minds," he said. The shopkeeper, like many others interviewed, requested anonymity for his own safety. Pressure from residents and the shooting and wounding of a local newspaperman who reported about the "martyrs" of Shabqadar compelled authorities in November to shut a local office of Harkat-ul-Mujahedeen, an outlawed Pakistani militant group. It had circulated jihadist literature and CDs and recruited mostly jobless young men to go to Afghanistan - like their fathers who fought the Soviet occupation of that country two decades ago.

Following the closure, recruiting has dried up, according to one former recruiter. But Samina Ahmed, an expert with the International Crisis Group think tank, warns that the upsurge in Taliban attacks on NATO forces is boosting the morale of sympathizers in Pakistani border areas and attracting recruits who are susceptible to militant propaganda and believe the Taliban can regain power.

Israel to get smart bombs in kit form
January 30, 2007

JERUSALEM: Israel is buying thousands of kits for advanced smart bombs from the US that the Jewish state first used during the Lebanon war.

According to the Jerusalem Post newspaper, the Israeli army will buy $US100 million ($129 million) worth of joint direct attack munitions - low-cost kits produced by Boeing that turn free-fall bombs into guided "smart" munitions. During last year's month-long war in Lebanon, Israel received an emergency aerial shipment of the munitions from the US, causing an international uproar after one of the cargo planes landed in an airport in Scotland, against safety and security regulations.
