:::FreeRepublic's Threat Matrix:::
Fighting Jihad: Strategic Thinking Needed
-Full Story-

The United States of America has some of the smartest leaders in government, military, and business in the world. Yet the American government has failed to collectively use this formidable brain-power 5+ years after the attack by Jihadists on the American homeland to develop a truly strategic plan to fight the global threat of Jihad and Islamist extremism. In one of the most complex wars in American history, rather than starting with holistic, big-picture thinking towards the challenges and prioritizing resources and actions accordingly, America has spent much of the past five years after 9/11 in reactive and bureaucratic churning.

Bomb suspects arrested in Afghanistan
January 21, 2007

AUTHORITIES in Afghanistan's southern city of Kandahar said Saturday they had arrested 11 suicide bombers in the past week, including two Pakistan nationals.

Kandahar's intelligence chief Abdul Qayoom said nine alleged suicide bombers were arrested in various parts of the troubled city in the past week. “They wanted to carry out attacks in different locations of Kandahar province. They were arrested with cars and explosives,” he said.

Two more were arrested yesterday, provincial governor Assadullah Khalid said. They were Pakistan nationals from Baluchistan province and had confessed, he said.

Army fired laser-guided missiles in Waziristan
Saturday, January 20, 2007

KOT KALAY: Pakistan used laser-guided precision missiles in Tuesday’s pre-dawn airstrike on three houses in which eight people were killed, as bereaved families rejected the government’s claim that the presence of foreign militants had led to the attack.

The residents of Kot Kalay in northeast South Waziristan showed a group of journalists on Friday an unexploded 500-pound missile that had pierced through a rooftop and went four feet into the ground. The provenance of the missiles wasn’t clear.

Military spokesman Maj Gen Shaukat Sultan told Daily Times over the telephone from Islamabad that laser-guided precision missiles had been used in the attack. “We fired the missiles from fighter aircraft. This is not the first time we have used this weapon,” he said. However, it is the first time the military has acknowledged using laser-guided precision weapons against militants in Waziristan.

Terror watch on Mecca pilgrims (UK)
January 21, 2007

The intelligence agencies are monitoring every Muslim who travels from Britain to Mecca on pilgrimage in a wider effort to piece together intelligence on suspected Al-Qaeda terrorist activity.

A senior Whitehall official has disclosed that the operation targeting trips to the holy city in Saudi Arabia by more than 100,000 British Muslims is part of a trawl by MI5 and MI6 for information about movements of suspected terrorists. It follows evidence that British Islamic terrorists have visited the city before carrying out attacks in Britain and abroad.

Muslims in police will rise up, Bakri insists (UK)
21/01/2007

Moderate British Muslims in the police, Armed Forces and Civil Service will one day revolt against the system to "crush it from within", according to Omar Bakri Mohammed, the notorious Islamic extremist.

In claims condemned as a cynical attempt to create division, the co-founder of the extremist al-Muhajiroun group said that Britain was "digging a deep hole" for itself by allowing Muslims into the Services and Whitehall. Speaking exclusively to The Sunday Telegraph in Lebanon, where he moved in August 2005 — at about the time it emerged the British authorities might charge him with incitement to treason — he claimed police officers, soldiers and civil servants would one day become radicalised.

"When you start to ask Muslims to join your Army and your police you are making a grave mistake. That British Muslim who joins the police today will one day read the Koran and will have an awakening," he said. "Those moderates are one day going to be practising Muslims. Now what happens if they are British police or in the Army and they have weapons? How much information do they have about you that they will use to serve the global struggle? "They will revolt against the system if they have been failed by your foreign policy which is oppressive against Islam, or have been contacted by people who believe Britain is a domain of war."

In remarks almost certain to cause widespread anger among the survivors and relatives of victims, he also claimed that the world was a better place after the July 7 bombings in London. "I believe it is a better place for Islam and Muslims… but not for non-Muslims. What's happening around the world is good and positive for Islam."

The comments were condemned by moderate Muslim leaders. Ibrahim Mogra, the chairman of the Interfaith Relations Committee of the Muslim Council of Britain, said: "This is part of an attempt to create divisions both within the Muslim community and the wider society.

Thanks Oorang for (http://www.ourmidland.com/site/news.cfm?newsid=17733976&BRD=2289&PAG=461&dept_id=472542&rfi=6 ) to that article in post no. 1201.

Article snippet from that link: "St. Louis said the envelope does not have a return address and the card inside is written in Korean. He was not sure if it came from North or South Korea, but said an interpreter will be asked to read the card to see what it is, he said.

The envelope was mailed to a home in the Gordonville Road area and was addressed to a man who currently is serving with the military in Iraq.
"They held on to it for a week, a week and a half, then decided to open it up," St. Louis said. "They have no idea what the contact would be in Korea."

The man who brought the letter to the center — the soldier’s father — was decontaminated in the parking lot there, St. Louis said, adding he would not need to be taken to the hospital. He was showing none of the symptoms that would be expected if he had been exposed to harmful agents. His vehicle also will be decontaminated."

FACT: I never open notes/letters that don't have a return address. -Cindy

Re #1210

The first question I have is whether the receipient of the letter is an ethnic Korean.

Many medications prescribed at Oriental Medicine clinic take the form of brown powder. It is possible that the powder found in the envelope could be also some sort of oriental medication.

They sell here a popular flu medication, which is powder in small sealed plastic packages.

Some of these medications could be actually stimulants. Some Chinese athlete ran into trouble at Olympic competition when they had those medication their grandma gave them in case they are not in top shape. They did not know that the medication contains banned substance. They failed the doping test.

Thanks TigerLikesRooster for your feedback.

In this case, the powder is described as "a bluish powder."

"Burma 'orders Christians to be wiped out'"

By Peter Pattisson in Kayin State, southern Burma, Sunday Telegraph
Last Updated: 12:02am GMT 21/01/2007

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "The military regime in Burma is intent on wiping out Christianity in the country, according to claims in a secret document believed to have been leaked from a government ministry. Entitled "Programme to destroy the Christian religion in Burma", the incendiary memo contains point by point instructions on how to drive Christians out of the state.

The text, which opens with the line "There shall be no home where the Christian religion is practised", calls for anyone caught evangelising to be imprisoned. It advises: "The Christian religion is very gentle – identify and utilise its weakness."

Its discovery follows widespread reports of religious persecution, with churches burnt to the ground, Christians forced to convert to the state religion, Buddhism, and their children barred from school.

Human rights groups claim that the treatment meted out to Christians, who make up six per cent of the population, is part of a wider campaign by the regime, also targeted at ethnic minority tribes, to create a uniform society in which the race and language is Burmese and the only accepted religion is Buddhism.

In the past year, an estimated 27,000 members of the predominantly Christian Karen tribe were driven from their homes in eastern Burma.

In Koh Kyi village, in Arakan State, a monk backed by the military burnt down the local church. In another state, 300 monks were allegedly sent by the regime to forcibly convert the populace, all of whom belonged to the Chin ethnic group, which is mostly Christian."

You're welcome Cindy.

I cannot shake your hand, sir. I'm a Muslim and you're a man
20th January 2007

A Muslim woman police officer has sparked a new debate by refusing to shake hands with Britain's most senior police chief for religious reasons.

The incident happened at a passing-out parade where Metropolitan Police Commissioner Sir Ian Blair was inspecting a line-up of 200 recruits. In addition to refusing a traditional congratulatory handshake from Sir Ian, the WPC - who wore a traditional Muslim hijab headscarf - also declined to be photographed with him as she did not want the picture used for 'propaganda purposes'.

The woman had earlier insisted that it was contrary to her religious teaching for her to touch a man. Now The Mail on Sunday has learned that her gesture has sparked top-level discussions at Scotland Yard. Some officers argue that her attitude towards men might impede her ability to detain offenders. However, it is clear that she is happy to come into contact with men, just not shake their hand or kiss them.

An inquiry has now been launched and the unidentified WPC - described as 'a non-Asian Muslim' - could face the sack if it is considered that her strict religious beliefs prevent her performing as an effective police officer.

However, senior commanders are worried that dismissing her would deepen the atmosphere of mistrust between the police and the Muslim community.
