"Dutch imams 'leaving in droves'"
By Sam Wilson
BBC News
ARTICLE SNIPPET: "Moderate Muslim preachers are leaving the Netherlands and being replaced by more extreme clerics, senior Dutch Muslim officials have warned.
Nasr Joemann of the Netherlands' Muslim Contact Group (CMO) said imams felt discriminated against and were leaving for France and Spain.
Of 450 Dutch mosques, 180 had no imam, leaving a vacuum that uncertified clerics were filling, he told BBC News."

Virus (norovirus) closes Washington Dulles airport Hilton Hotel
Seattle PI ^ | Jan. 19, 2007 | AP

A Hilton hotel outside Washington has been closed for a top-to-bottom scrubbing after 15 employees and more than 100 guests were sickened by the highly contagious norovirus, a hotel spokesman said Friday.
Hotel officials first heard reports of sick guests Wednesday and contacted Fairfax County health authorities, said Jim Cree, the director of sales and marketing at the hotel near Dulles International Airport. Officials confirmed it was norovirus Thursday night, he said.
Outbreaks of norovirus, which causes vomiting and diarrhea, are common on cruise ships and in places like hotels, prisons and nursing homes.

Bird flu spreads in South Korea (fifth outbreak, mallard duck connection)

Bird flu spreads in South Korea
1 hour, 2 minutes ago
Bird flu has spread in South Korea to a fifth farm, officials have said, despite stepped up government efforts to contain outbreaks of the deadly virus in recent weeks.
The agriculture ministry said bird flu has been discovered in a village within a 10-kilometre quarantine zone established after a previous outbreak on a chicken farm last month.
"Test results confirmed breeding chickens at a poultry farm at Punge village were infected with high pathological bird flu virus," the ministry said in a statement.
Officials have ordered culling of thousands of chickens on the farm and area surrounding the village near the central city of Cheonan, 90 kilometers (56 miles) south of Seoul.
"Immediate culling of 270,000 birds within a radius of 500 meters from the farm was ordered," the ministry said, adding that movement of birds and eggs within a 10-kilometre radius was banned.
The ministry blamed migrating wild geese for spreading the highly contagious virus saying the strain was the same as one found among wild birds in northeastern China.
"High pathological AI (avian influenza) virus was confirmed in wild birds' excrement sampled near the same farm in Pungse village and around Miho stream, some 20 kilometers off," it said.
"Once again, the ministry calls on poultry farms to take measures to keep wild birds off and urges restraint in visiting wild birds' resting places," it said.
Officials have slaughtered some 1.2 million birds at farms near the southern cities of Iksan, Gimje and Asan after the country's first case of bird flu in almost three years was confirmed on November 25.
South Korea was hit hard by bird flu between December 2003 and March 2004, prompting the cull of 5.3 million poultry costing about one billion dollars.
Bird flu has killed more than 150 people worldwide since late 2003 and there remain fears it may become a far more highly contagious disease that could trigger a deadly, global pandemic.

The local media reports that habitat of mallard ducks are several miles away from the site of outbreak. They suspect those ducks may be the source.
By the way, the above article misspelled the name of village where outreak occurred. It is not Punge, but Pung-seh (or Poong-seh.)

"Abu Hamza's home could be seized to pay £1.1m legal bill"
Daily Mail ^ | 18th January 2007
Posted on 01/19/2007 11:53:20 PM PST by Lorianne
ARTICLE SNIPPET: "Abu Hamza faces having his home seized after judges ruled he must repay his £1.1million legal aid bill.
The hook-handed Muslim cleric, who is serving a seven-year jail term, claimed he could not afford to pay for his defence at his trial for soliciting murder last year.
But investigators from the Legal Services Commission, which administers legal aid, uncovered evidence proving he was a shrewd wheelerdealer in the property market.
Yesterday, he was ordered to pay the full bill after the Old Bailey heard he had given false information about his financial situation.
The court heard that Hamza, 48, used a right-to-buy scheme to get a council flat in Hammersmith, West London, for £75,000 and sold it several years later for £228,000.
A few weeks after that, he paid £220,000 for a 1930s semi in Greenford, West London, which has since risen in value to around £280,000.
Hamza, appearing by video link from prison, claimed his sister Ola Kamel Mostafa, who lives in Egypt, had bought and sold the properties and he did not profit from the sales.
But Lord Justice Hughes said: "The account that the defendant has given me simply isn't true. He has provided inadequate and indeed false information.
"Accordingly I make an order for the recovery of defence costs in the sum of the full cost of representation."
The order means that the Legal Services Commission will be able to apply to seize the house in Greenford."

"The Second Holocaust Is Looming"
By Benny Morris
IsraelInsider.com | January 19, 2007
COMMENTARY SNIPPET: "Still, the second Holocaust will be different in the sense that Ahmedinejad will not actually see and touch those he so wishes dead (and, one may speculate, this might cause him disappointment as, in his years of service in Iranian death squads in Europe, he may have acquired a taste for actual blood). And, indeed, there will be no scenes like the following, quoted in Daniel Mendelsohn's recent 'The Lost, A Search for Six of Six Million,' in which is described the second Nazi Aktion in Bolechow, Poland, in September 1942:
'A terrible episode happened with Mrs. Grynberg. The Ukrainians and Germans, who had broken into her house, found her giving birth. The weeping and entreaties of bystanders didn't help and she was taken from her home in a nightshirt and dragged into the square in front of the town hall. There, she was dragged onto a dumpster in the yard of the town hall with a crowd of Ukraininans present, who cracked jokes and jeered and watched the pain of childbirth and she gave birth to a child. The child was immediately torn from her arms along with its umbilical cord and thrown -- It was trampled by the crowd and she was stood on her feet as blood poured out of her with bleeding bits hanging and she stood that way for a few hours by the wall of the town hall, afterwards she went with all the others to the train station where they loaded her into a carriage in a train to Belzec [extermination camp].'
In the next Holocaust there will be no such heart-rending scenes, of perpetrators and victims mired in blood (though, to judge from pictures of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the physical effects of nuclear explosions can be fairly unpleasant).
But it will be a Holocaust nonetheless."
