CAIRO, Egypt Militants in Iraq with links to al-Qaida are claiming responsibility for an attack on a convoy that killed an American democracy worker.
Contractors from Hungary, Croatia and Iraq also died in the ambush, along with the 28-year-old Ohio woman. The three-vehicle convoy was part of a mission for the National Democratic Institute, which gives advice on voter outreach.
Sunni insurgents linked to al-Qaida have claimed responsibility on a Web site. A statement praising the deadly attack came from a group considered to be a branch of al-Qaida in Iraq.
U-S officials could not verify the Internet statement.

"Gunfire at Somali leader's home"
ARTICLE SNIPPET: "Heavy gunfire has broken out at the residence of the Somali president in the capital, Mogadishu, witnesses say.
Unidentified attackers are said to have used mortar fire against Villa Somalia before engaging the presidential guards in a 30-minute exchange of fire.
It is unclear whether Somali President Abdullahi Yusuf was there at the time. There are no reports of casualties.
Mr Yusuf arrived in Mogadishu last week after Ethiopian forces helped oust Islamist militias controlling the city.
The attack on his residence comes hours after Ethiopian Prime Minister Meles Zenawi told the BBC his troops would start leaving Somalia "in the next few days".
Mr Meles said the first phase of the withdrawal could start now that several key warlords had disarmed.
The African Union (AU) is meeting to discuss sending a peacekeeping force to Somalia to replace the Ethiopians."

1/19/2007 - COLUMBUS AIR FORCE BASE, Miss. (AFNEWS) -- A Columbus AFB T-38 Talon crashed about 1:30 p.m. Jan. 18 approximately 40 miles south of Memphis, Tenn.
There were two pilots on board and both ejected safely.
Both pilots were examined by medical authorities, released and returned to Columbus AFB.
At the time of the accident, the aircraft was conducting a low-level navigation training sortie.
The cause for the mishap is under investigation by an Air Force safety team.
Additional details will be provided as soon as they become available.
Another "explosive" update:
Chemical Stash Is Destroyed At Miami Condo
Florida - Two days after a predawn chemical explosion rocked a 17-story Miami condo, investigators are picking through the possessions of a 23-year-old chemistry student -- and blowing some of them up -- and the building remains evacuated. Several chemicals from the stash of 23-year-old Itai Polatnick, who is charged with failing to properly store hazardous materials, have been taken to a pair of pits just east of the building to be detonated, said Ignatius Carroll, Miami Fire Department spokesman.
Wednesday's pyrotechnics were so powerful that the alarms of the cars parked in the Sausalito Square shopping center parking lot across the street went off.
The operation at the Blue Lagoon condos, 5075 NW Seventh St., is costing several hundred thousand dollars, authorities said.
Approximately 70 members of the Miami police and fire departments; Department of Homeland Security; Drug Enforcement Administration; FBI; Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the Department of Environmental Protection have been camping out near the condo.
In addition, the FBI has flown in a top chemist from Washington, D.C.
Bomb squad robots are also being employed. (snip)

"Airport Screeners Suspicious of Quarterback's Water Bottle"
Evan S. Benn
The Miami Herald
ARTICLE SNIPPET: "Jan. 18 -- Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Vick was reluctant to throw away his water bottle at a Miami International Airport security checkpoint Wednesday morning."
ARTICLE SNIPPET: "The bottle had a clear partition in the middle, separating the bottle into two compartments. An online spy-equipment retailer lists an Aquafina Water Bottle Diversion Safe for $15. "It has room for more than just water," according to metrospysupply.com. "Twist and pull the bottle in half to reveal a hidden compartment."
In his report, Miami-Dade Det. Kevin Kozak wrote: "The concealed compartment contained a small amount of dark particulate and a pungent aroma closely associated with marijuana. The top half contained a small amount of clear liquid. When held upright the bottle appeared to be half full of water.""
