WASHINGTON — Gerald R. Ford leaves his beloved U.S. Capitol for the last time Tuesday as the period set aside for ordinary Americans to say goodbye gives way to an elaborate invitation-only funeral at the awe-inspiring Washington National Cathedral.

As the first order of business Tuesday, Ford's remains were being removed from the Rotunda to lie in repose briefly outside the Senate before leaving the Capitol where Ford served as a congressman for 25 years. As vice president, Ford also had the constitutional title of president of the Senate.

I must have been confused. I thought they said the Bishop of the Diocese was presideing, but apparently this is not the Bishop.

Sorry, flaglady. This is a solemn and historic occasion; are you watching the proceedings as well?

Bishop Chane of Washington is presiding over the service, but the current speaker is Rev. Robert Certain, from Palm Desert, California.

I agree Miss Marple with one exception. I am a one issue voter in one area only.....National Defense. If I don't believe a candidate will be strong on defense he will not get my vote. For without a strong defense none of the other issues will matter.

I am with the two of you on Carter -- he has been a traitor for years. I have no doubt he would make any deal he could with a dictator if it benefitted him.

I heard, early on, that the Ford's parish priest would be travelling everywhere with Mrs. Ford for the state funeral so this may be him...

And now the Lord's prayer. What a beautiful cathedral.

Reverend Certain has quite a flying record.......

A distinguished graduate of the Air Force ROTC program there, he was commissioned a second lieutenant and became a navigator-bombardier, flying B-52 aircraft. At the end of his second tour of duty in Southeast Asia, he was shot down over Hanoi, North Vietnam in December 1972, and held captive until the end of March 1973. As a result of his active military service, he was awarded the Legion of Merit, Distinguished Flying Cross, Bronze Star, two Purple Hearts, five Air Medals, the Prisoner of War Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Commendation Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Republic of Vietnam Cross of Gallantry, and Vietnam Campaign Medal.

a little niggling doubt about this is creeping into my brain"

Not to mention the fact that even if it is true, is it appropriate to put here? It's as if the Bishop doesn't understand what his purpose is. It wasn't supposed to be about him, [the Bishop].

"Sorry, flaglady. This is a solemn and historic occasion; are you watching the proceedings as well?"

Yes, indeed I am. I think it is a wonderful tribute to Gerald Ford and his family. I think the speakers have all been heartfelt, and that the service itself is lovely. A parting final salute to a man who served his country well. And I didn't agree with some of his opinions, as well as the current Presidents, but at the time of their funerals, it is when one honors them for their great service to their country. Methinks it isn't the easiest job in the world being President. And the singing of the Lord's Prayer is lovely, I met add.

It's not the Bishop, it is the family's minister. Why he would lie in front of people he knows so well, I do not know.

Ah, Denyce Graves... a great soprano. :))

Please! Nonetheless, it is boring and also rather depressing, being boring as well as looking like "sag". At least since everybody does it.
