WASHINGTON — Gerald R. Ford leaves his beloved U.S. Capitol for the last time Tuesday as the period set aside for ordinary Americans to say goodbye gives way to an elaborate invitation-only funeral at the awe-inspiring Washington National Cathedral.

As the first order of business Tuesday, Ford's remains were being removed from the Rotunda to lie in repose briefly outside the Senate before leaving the Capitol where Ford served as a congressman for 25 years. As vice president, Ford also had the constitutional title of president of the Senate.

Speakers were chosen by President Ford and the family. Fred Barnes says that President Ford was friends with many reporters when he was in Congress, so perhaps there was a friendship from that time. Bokaw was a correspondent and then Today host during Ford's presidency.

I agree. I have tears just looking at tiny Mrs. Ford. What wonderful children they raised.

Just because you haven't seen them doesn't mean they aren't there.

Yes! Any mention on why the Bush twins aren't there, if Chelsea is in the seats of honor? I am glad that Condi is in the same row as Hill & Bill. I am so sad that Cheney is not speaking again. Lynn looks so sad, or she is bummed to be seated next to Jimmah.

What's up with Brit's comment--former presidents should be seen and not heard like little children...how about as a matter of respect?

I don't know, but Patricia Nixon Cox made a nice statement:

""A good man who became the respected leader of the free world in unique times," said Patricia Nixon Cox, daughter of the man Ford succeeded. "An American hero whose integrity and honesty helped lead our nation through times of uncertainty and skepticism." "

It took me a moment to realize who you meant, since I don't think of women who are touching sixty as "girls". :)

I know. But, I'm just guessing the camera would have panned to them.

Lighten up, Francis. It is a tradition for national days of mourning.

Haven't seen the Nixon daughters. IMHO, they should be there.

I heard Trish Nixon was there on Satuday night .. I'm sure they will be there today also
