WASHINGTON — Gerald R. Ford leaves his beloved U.S. Capitol for the last time Tuesday as the period set aside for ordinary Americans to say goodbye gives way to an elaborate invitation-only funeral at the awe-inspiring Washington National Cathedral.

As the first order of business Tuesday, Ford's remains were being removed from the Rotunda to lie in repose briefly outside the Senate before leaving the Capitol where Ford served as a congressman for 25 years. As vice president, Ford also had the constitutional title of president of the Senate.

During President Ford's funeral I cried every time I heard "Hail to the Chief". I can sympatize with his son. What is it about "Hail to the Chief"? It's so short. Does anyone here on FR know the words to it?

Thank you for the pictures. I'm glad to see the crowd downtown near the museum. The Boy Scouts look to be on the same road where we stood.

I heard on FoxNews that President Bush and First Lady Laura Bush wanted to give President Ford's grandchildren and great grandchildren a chance to view, up close and personal, the White House where their grandfather and great grandfather served as President of the United States of America. A very nice gesture.

When Nancy Pelosi showed up before President Ford's casket in the Rotunda, she smiled. Even my husband said, as we watched, "Why is she smiling?".

Sounds beautiful !!! Congratulations to you and to your daughter and her husband. There are few buildings in the world more impressive than the National Cathedral, and DC in Springtime is as pretty as any city in the world. Plus, you had the added bonus of a direct connection and the intimacy of the chapel.

When my kids were little, we lived relatively nearby and it was a wonderful place to take them for an afternoon walk. To this day my 20-something loves to go there and soak it all in.

maybe Julie Nixon and David Eisenhower were married there? I have no memory of any presidential daughters being married at the cathedral.

Jimmy Carter has had to listen to almost every speaker state the fact he only beat President Ford because Ford pardoned Nixon.

A commentator on NBC said that but for about 5000 votes in various places, Ford would have won the '76 election.

Being a Republican, he didn't contest it or even whine about it.

I pray Betty makes it through this long day.

As an accidental First Lady, she did good for the nation, too. She is looking pretty frail now, and losing her best friend of over 50 years is going to hit her very hard.

Thanks! I heard the rendition of 'Hail to the Victors' on C-SPAN tonight. Sounded great and that is from a former Buckeye now Sooner fan. Neat to hear that the 747 from the Presidential fleet made a pass over the Big House -- that is so fitting because he loved the maize and blue so much.

Thanks! I got it from a wonderful lady who is a regular on the Canteen thread. I needed a new slogan for a sign to counter the wackos who were protesting at one of our bases. She gave me that! And she was right..... the sign really pissed off the liberal loonies! I just can't think of her name at the moment!!! (pretty embarrassing) =(

I saw that on C-Span too. I don't think they showed the entire airport ceremony where they apparently played a somber version first. Regardless, it was nice to hear.

And I congratulate you on your decision to become a Sooner fan. You have landed a good QB prospect from our area who "decommitted" from Michigan State to attend Oklahoma :)

That was very touching and which Israeli leader was that?

Israeli Deputy PM Shimon Peres. See post #191.
