Our kids have cell phones - pay as you go plan and we have no conflicts - T-Mobile has $50 for 400 mins and so far so good.

But

Cell phones are dangerous emitters of Rf energy. They will be identified as a strong source of brain deterioration when the insurance plans start paying out for brain diseases the way they did for smoking related illnesses.

No they are not. They emit RF as does any radio transmitter but the power levels involved are too low to be of any danger.

It has been studied to death. Most phones now run less than 1 HALF of a watt total power output. Only a small fraction (if any) of that makes it through your thick skull into your brain. It can't deteriorate your brain any more than it is already.

(When I say "your" I don't mean you personally, I mean "your" as in whoever is using the phone)
